EMERGENCY ACTION REQUIRED: New McCain ad reeks of fetid beyond anything Rovian
13 recommendation(s).
+Recommend this blog A McCain ad that just reeks fetid beyond anything Rove could conjure. John McCain is airing a new ad entitled “Tiny,” which he “approved” and that is airing in a number of battleground states. Via this ad, the Arizona senator has shown himself to be a total sleaze ball who makes Karl Rove worthy of beatification. First, view the ad. After you have, return to this email to learn specifically what Barack Obama actually said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhH2q6h7_Ow (Might have to cut/paste to your browser) Here’s the transcript of the ad: “Iran. Radical Islamic government. Known sponsors of terrorism. Developing nuclear capabilities to ‘generate power’ but threatening to eliminate Israel. “Obama says Iran is a ‘tiny’ country, ‘doesn’t pose a serious threat,’” The ad then proceeds, “Terrorism, destroying Israel, those aren’t ‘serious threats’? Obama — dangerously unprepared to be president.” Now here’s the full YouTube video of what Senator Obama said on May 18th in Pendleton, Oregon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew5qP2oPdtQ (Might have to cut/paste to your browser) And here’s the transcript: “Strong countries and strong presidents talk to their adversaries. That’s what Kennedy did with Khrushchev. That’s what Reagan did with Gorbachev. That’s what Nixon did with Mao. I mean, think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela — tiny, compared to the Soviet Union. They don’t pose a serious thret to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet, we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying, ‘We’re going to wipe you off the planet.’ “And ultimately, that direct engagement led to a series of measures that helped prevent nuclear war, and over time, allowed the kind of opening that brought down the Berlin Wall.” Senator Obama goes on, “Now, that has to be the kind of approach we take. You know, Iran, they spend one-one hundredth of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn’t stand a chance. And we should use that position of strength that we have, to be bold enough to go ahead and listen. That doesn’t mean we agree with them on everything. We might not compromise on any issues, but at least we should find out other areas of potential common interest, and we can reduce some of the tensions that have caused us so many problems around the world.” The McCain ad is a deliberately cut-and-paste lie. And John McCain is the very worst type of liar for engaging it. Please . . . your friends, associates, relatives may only get McCain’s cut-and-paste version, and thereby find all the completely distorted impressions they have formed to this point further reinforced. Pass along the entirety of this email. Scurrilous is scurrilous, but this, this . . . I don’t have a vocabulary sufficiently foul to describe it. — Ed Tubbs Reno, NV Read more | 0 comments

Clint Eastwood, as Bill Munny in his 1992 Oscar-winning The Unforgiven, correctly comments, “It’s a hellova thing, killin’ a man. Take away all he’s got, and all he’s ever gonna have.” Soldiers and marines headed to combat face that ultimate price — and worse — for their devotion to duty and country. They always have. It has never mattered whether they volunteered to go, or whether the country drafted them to it! From my June of ’64 days at Fort Knox basic, I recall the hours on the firing range and those shoving a rifle-tipped bayonet through hanging tires and stuffed burlap dummies, all the while screaming at the top of my lungs something along the lines of “YAHHH!!” I never faced the real thing, but from what I saw in those who had, the actual thing is rather more intense than Eastwood’s “hellova thing, killin’ a man.” And the more they faced it and did it, each experience took another chunk from his humanity, from his equilibrium, from his sanity to the point that all too often the only sense he could make of it, and the only sense he could recapture of himself and his humanity was in the deep cesspool of drugged stupor. Sometimes he never crawled out of that cesspool. In fact, sometimes he and the cesspool became one. Yesterday (August 27), I visited the VA medical center in Reno. I was there for my annual checkup. Sign in in the morning for the blood draw and to deposit a urine specimen in a cup. Then, just as it was on active duty: hurry up and wait until the appointment to have my blood pressure and pulse-rate and weight measured. With nothing else to do, I headed to the outside smoking area where other vets had gathered. Like me, some were there to wait. Others were hospital patients who had come down for a smoke; often because there was little else for them to do in their room. If you’ve ever been confined to a hospital for any time, you know the boredom. I never did get his name, but one of those was dressed in street gear, waiting to be seen, waiting to be treated. He was wearing a weathered to faded and past worn baseball cap, across the front of which was “Vietnam vet, and proud of it.” That cap composed his most serviceable item of clothing. I estimated he was somewhere in his mid- to late 50s, though he looked older; faded and weathered as to life itself — a scraggle of thinning grey hair, wrinkled face deep as furrows, and a mouth that had long been bereft of serviceable teeth. It’s what vets do: swap memories and engage recent experiences and conditions. While I was interested in doing some of the chatting, it became clear to me that this fellow hadn’t the capacity to hear. He wasn’t deaf; at least in the physically aurally deficient sense. Rather, all he was able to manage was a rambling string that didn’t allow for much in the way of intake. So, with not much of an option, I elected to listen, at least until one of us finished our respective cigarettes. “From Reno. Been here, oh . . .” Another drag on the cigarette. Without finishing the sentence, he then meandered to a different range, one with equally indistinct features. “F**kin’ stabbed.” He patted the swelling bulge beneath the scruff of his dirty shirt. “Was divin’ the dumpster behind the Atlantis.” (One of the many casinos in Reno.) “Know . . .” another puff on the cigarette, “they toss out some pretty good food. Steak can be cold, an’ that’s not too bad. But I always go fer the chicken.” Another shallow pull from the cigarette. “Gotta watch out for the goddamned rent-a-dicks though: Mutha-f**kin’ bastards . . . all they wanna do is roust ya from the dumpster. Doan have nothin’ f**kin’ better ta do.” After that, and with his cigarette smoked to a half-inch of the end, whoever he was got up and left. Another vet across the mesh-wire table was in hospitable garb. We didn’t chat much either. Not enough for me to get his name, or anything concerning his service. But he did say that the fellow who had just left was one of the hundred or so homeless vets who wander in; most sick of one thing or another, many victims of street violence, and few with the ability to converse beyond rolling monologues that begin from nowhere and head nowhere. Getting stabbed or beat up is almost a blessing: for a few days or weeks they have a roof over their head, and if their physical problems permit it, genuinely decent food to fill bellies that haven’t known it for as long as they can remember. “Had their brains scrambled in Vietnam,” is how the fellow across from me diagnosed the genesis of their difficulties. I’ve met a few. Anecdotally, my best suspicions suspect he’s right. And I always trek rearward, wondering who they were before; before the war America seeks so desperately to forget. I bet they were kids just like the ones today, and just like the ones who dodged the peril, back in the day. Except they didn’t dodge, nor duck much. Nope, they were targets who got hit somewhere dead on. According to House and Senate committee hearings testimony, the VA, and Bureau of the Census, a full one-third of all homeless in America are Vietnam vets. Some part of that took all they had, all they were “ever gonna have.” Senator McCain has voted “nay” on every bill that has come up since 2001 to add to the Veterans Affairs budget. Support the troops? Yeah . . . — Ed Tubbs Reno, NV PS — Of course I welcome responses, those that disagree as well as those that agree. But I’ve got to insist that only those retaining the courage of their convictions to include their real name and the city where they reside, exactly as they would for any letter to the editor, will be read or responded to. Now is the time for all of us to live up to the words and sentiments in our National Anthem. Read more | 0 comments
Conservatives vs Liberals

+Recommend this blog Conservatives vs Liberals
I’m going to begin with a truism: What one believes bears no necessary relationship with that which is true. The most eloquent example, of the hundred or so I could recite, traces back to the early 1600s in Europe, when the most potent transnational power was the Roman Catholic Church. The leadership held beliefs so strong they were backed by the most heinous of inhuman savageries as punishments to be visited on any and all who dared even think, then question the validity of the postulated beliefs. A frail old man was hauled before the Inquisition and was found guilty for promulgating the Copernican heliocentric (the sun is the center) notion as correct and the Church as incorrect. Galileo was condemned to house arrest and forbidden to “believe” anything that was at odds with what the Church held. However the roll began like a locomotive, to pull slowly out of the station, with the emerging Southern strategy of Nixon and Reagan, the conservative charge really gained vicious momentum in 1994; Democrats were demonized as not being sufficiently family oriented, as being insufficiently “Christian,” as unpatriotic, as even hating America. I’m about as liberal — in the classic, European Enlightenment sense where the scientific method and evidence trump assertions of truth via “beliefs,” what you do with your body is none of my business, wherein no adult has authority over another to decide what any other adult may read, see, write, or say, and the Jeffersonian proposition that “Whether my neighbor believes in one god or twenty does me no harm; it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my legs.” — as hopefully you not find an equal. Last week I attended a gathering that commenced with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. I excused myself at the intent. I try to stay away from events where the National Anthem will likely be played. My position is that if love of country depends on indoctrination via some memorized lines that spew forth from one’s lips with no more genuine passion than what Pavlov got from his dogs with a dinner bell, the country is probably not worth all that much. As to the National Anthem, as I cast my gaze about I’m unable to locate many who truly fit the definition of “brave.” That said, few who know me know of no one who loves this country more. Those who have seen my naked body know the price I have paid for that love. As a young man, I served in the infantry, I served in the jungles, and I served my adoration of this country with a devotion that has never waned. I don’t need to demonstrate to anyone’s satisfaction that my love and patriotism meet their standards. And nothing angers me more than the vitriol that has gushed from the rear sphincters of conservatives, most especially from those cowards who had not the fortitude to serve, have not even the moral decency to want to pay their share of the financial cost, but have plenty of courage to send someone else, or someone else’s child, and put the financial burden on some future generation. A few questions for conservatives; think of this as a quiz. Currently in one of the chambers of the federal legislature is a Medal of Honor recipient. Can you name the individual, the state from which this person hails, and the party affiliation? Next question: The 110th Congress consists of 435 members who are divided between Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Of the three, which has the greatest number of military veterans, and, if you summed all combat medals that have been awarded, which has the greater number? Third question: If legislating on behalf of improved equipment for the active military (including the Guard and Reserves headed into combat) and on behalf of enhanced health and educational benefits for veterans is guide, which political party has historically as well as currently proven a genuinely greater support of the troops, and which party has steadfastly been more miserly? (No! I’m not going to provide the answers. I want all you conservatives to do the research and thereby be disabused of your own sanctimony.) Georgia’s Senator Max Cleland lost three limbs in Vietnam. Conservatives disparaged him as not being sufficiently patriotic and elected Johnny Isakson whose courage and bravery and patriotism were limited to six years, from 1966 to ’72, in the Georgia Air National Guard. (Those of us who served during that period fully recognized such service was a clear dodge from the peril of being sent to Vietnam, and a better alternative than facing indictment for fleeing the country.) Conservatives have brought two other issues to the fore, as the other primary arrows in their quiver, to attack liberals: abortion and gay rights. Let’s get one thing clear concerning “abortion”: Given there are approximately 300 million in the US today, the odds are great that some parents actually encourage their daughters to get pregnant, just so she can experience the thrill of abortion. I don’t know any that fit that population, nor have I ever heard of any who might. But I suppose there are. It’s my bet, on the other hand, that under the bell curve, way, way, way into one of the tails, most oppose it strenuously; not the right to one, but the encouragement of the experience. Moreover, all of those I’ve ever known, all of those I’ve ever heard of who support women’s reproductive rights to decide the issue themselves . . . all are staunchly in favor of human life. (Disclosure: My personal position is that men have no moral right whatsoever pontificating on an issue, one way, or the other, that is women’s alone.) Making abortions completely illegal will not end the practice. Prior to Roe, young women who found themselves pregnant — and the mortified parents who would face horrendous social ostracizing — had the following choices available: bear the child and keep it, bear the child and surrender it to adoption, travel outside the country to secure an abortion, seek an abortion from a back-alley butcher, use a coat-hanger in an effort to do the job herself. It was often the case that those from a moneyed family went to Europe, for an extended R&R; “Sally’s been under such stress lately that we just felt she needed a break.” Many, many other women paid a back-alley butcher, then visited an emergency room, then, and all too often, paid with their lives in a most gruesome and agonizing death. The same held true for those who went the clothes-hanger route. What Roe did — and what those opposed to Roe refuse to acknowledge — was to save the lives and prevent the physical mutilation of countless hundreds of thousands of young women. I’m not here going to suggest Roe’s opponents don’t care about the lives and physical condition of living women, or that the pregnancy and burden of bearing and raising an unwanted child is somehow seen as just punishment for the sexual proclivities of the youth. Nonetheless, by the stridency of those opposed to Roe, the perception that that is part of their zeal is understandable. But let’s get Biblical. There are a multitude of conservatives who contend that human life commences at the moment of conception, that the hundreds of thousands of Petri dishes containing frozen cells are somehow so sacrosanct that the contents cannot be used for scientific research into the causes and possible cures of any number of real human ailments; this regardless that the overwhelming majority are bound for incineration as bio-hazards! Better those contents be burned in a furnace than the souls of the living burn in hell for some perceived or imagined sinful trespass. As to the Biblical I referenced: Genesis 2:7 states, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Anyone can believe whatever they wish, and as I said, there exists no necessity that that which one believes actually obtains the first moment of truth or fact. But if you’re bound to Biblical edict as the wellspring of your position, Genesis is exquisitely manifest when life begins and when the human soul gains consonance with life! Any other postulation taken by Roe’s opponents draws from their own whimsy and agenda, not the Bible! Personally, I feel the conservative so-called “Pro-life” position on Roe would secure much greater validity if they showed as much concern for the living, breathing poor souls among them, and actually showed as enthusiastic an attitude for comprehensive sex education in America’s middle and high schools, comprehensive sex education that would diminish unwanted pregnancies, than they do for the collection of cells that have not obtained viability outside the womb. I know where the strenuous opposition to gays and lesbians comes from, and I know where those who condemn the orientation claim it comes from. And trust me, you do not want to travel the highway of Biblically prohibited behaviors and the prescribed punishments for violations of those prohibitions. You really, really do not! What I will do, to illustrate the conservative hypocrisy of trying to introduce such sanctions as support of one’s espoused anti-gay and anti-lesbian position, is to cite what the Bible either treats lightly or defends: murder of one’s brother, infanticide (a father burning his son to death), genocide, rape and pillaging, incest, and slavery. What I’m also going to do is report that in none of the five gospels where Jesus is reputed to have voiced an opinion does he comment on homosexuality. But he does repeatedly speak on behalf of feeding and clothing and caring for the sick and the poor and the widows. In fact, Jesus asserts that the only way one can follow him is to sell all one has and donate the proceeds to the poor! Not simply sell what is convenient, but EVERYTHING! Furthermore, Jesus did not hold the rich “who have their reward” in much esteem, or give them equal odds to those of a camel passing through the eye of a needle at entering his father’s house. So, just what the hell are so vaunted about “conservative values,” and thereby conservatives, that they should be accorded much attention? Finally, and, as the preceding was the setup, what I wanted most of all to get to is the much-mouthed bad-mouthing by conservatives of liberals, Republicans of Democrats. Take a look at their respective recent governance, at their voting records, at their party platforms, and at the stated positions of their presidential candidates. Regardless of their respective shouted religious predispositions, or the dearth of same by the Democrats, try to find the Democratic positions that are not in 100% consonance with those espoused in the New Testament. Next, try to find the Republican positions, backed by votes and funding, that are, then do the contrast and compare thing. C’mon conservatives. Not just slathered palavering, do the research, gimme the solid attributable, referenced results. Whether it’s doing one’s patriotic duty or walking the walk, I’ve supplied specifics that support my take on things. Isn’t it time for you to put up, or just shut the hell up? — Ed Tubbs Reno, NV PS — Of course I welcome responses, those that disagree as well as those that agree. +Recommend this blog In case you missed these powerful words from Two of our Countries Dedicated Veterans of the Current Occupation Theaters.
Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan can be Proud of these two, your brother and sister Veterans, as can the Families of All who are Serving and have Served, for You All are the Only Ones Sacrificing as this Country refuses to understand that Sacrifice! The 'Honorable Cause' is the protection of your brother's and sister's as they protect you, in any conflict theater this nation sends those that serve it, wrong or right! This Country must Now make it Right for All of You, it has Shirked It's Full Responsibility for far too long, from Korea to the Present Day, that must End!! Tammy Duckworth YouTube Video Four years ago, I was co-piloting a Blackhawk helicopter north of Baghdad when a rocket-propelled grenade struck the cockpit. My buddies carried my body out not knowing if I was dead or alive. They knew the soldier's creed: never leave a fallen comrade behind. They lived up to it. They risked their own lives to save mine. Because of them, I am here today, an Iraq war veteran, a female helicopter pilot and a wounded warrior-living in a country where people with disabilities have rights. Because of them, I am here today, an Asian American, a Daughter of the American Revolution as well as a daughter of an immigrant. Acts of courage like theirs happen everywhere American troops serve. They are happening right now. I know that-so does my family. My father served in Vietnam, my brother served in the Coast Guard, my husband just returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom. We served because we believe in this great nation and the opportunities it has given us. And because our service members support us, we must always keep the faith with them. The administration of George Bush-supported by John McCain every step of the way-has let our warriors down. Our troops are courageous, strong and fierce. This administration has re-deployed them until they are overstretched, stressed and strained. Our warriors should fight in Afghanistan where al-Qaida and the Taliban are on the offensive. But instead of destroying the enemies who attacked us on 9/11, we have diverted our military might to Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11. When our warriors come home they deserve the best VA medical care, but too often they get bureaucracy, not benefits. They find inadequate access, inferior facilities and infuriating paperwork. And now, John McCain wants to ration care. Under his plan, the VA will serve combat injuries, but everyone else gets an insurance card. Barack Obama and the Democrats have a different idea. Barack Obama will live up to their tradition of honor and sacrifice. Barack Obama will use war not as a first choice, but a last resort. Barack Obama understands that for a commander-in- chief to support the military, he needs more than a "Mission Accomplished" banner, more than wearing a borrowed flight suit, and definitely more than four more years of the same failed foreign policy. President Obama will restore the might of the military, invest in our troops and only send our sons and daughters to war if they have a clearly defined mission and the tools they need to succeed. I speak from more than a gut feeling on this. I know Barack Obama. I met him when he visited me and other wounded troops at Walter Reed. He came without reporters. He wasn't looking for credit. He just cared about how we were doing. He knew that wherever you stand on the war, you must love the warrior, and he does. I testified before his committee; I listened to him talk, but then I watched what he did and how he voted. As a Senator, Barack Obama worked to improve the lives of all our veterans. He fought to fix our rundown hospitals. He fought to cut through the red tape. Unlike John McCain, Barack Obama fought for a new GI bill-and won-so that every veteran has the same opportunity to pursue their American dream just like his grandfather had after World War II. So I know what he'll do as president. An America with President Obama will have a 21st century VA. He'll improve access to health care. He'll speed up disability claims. He'll increase services for nationwide post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries as we have already done in Illinois under Governor Blagojevich's leadership. And Barack Obama will have a simple principle for homeless veterans: zero tolerance, because we are all dishonored when those who've worn the uniform sleep on our streets. But here's what he won't do: President Obama will reject John McCain's plan to privatize the VA system. We won't force veterans to search for medical care with nothing but a plastic card and the promise of payment. We won't have means testing for access to the VA. Why? Because Barack Obama knows this: no one asked us where we lived or how much money we had when we enlisted, and no one should ask us that after we've bled for our country. Fellow Democrats, fellow Americans: I believe in this nation that I love more than my own life. Today we have an opportunity to honor our military men and women by living up to that soldier's creed. Today we have an opportunity to give our veterans the benefits they rightfully earned. Today we have the opportunity to change our relations with the world. I believe that America will elect the leader who has always fought to keep our nation's promise to our veterans. I believe America will elect the leader who can best keep this nation strong. Barack Obama is right for our military. Barack Obama is right for our veterans. Barack Obama is right for our country. And that's why Barack Obama will be our next commander-in-chief. God bless you, and always, God bless America. The Honorable Patrick Murphy, Democratic National Convention, Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Patrick Murphy YouTube Video We called it fire month. It was 138 degrees inBaghdad in August of 2003, and my fellow paratroopers and I were running convoys up and down Ambush Alley. We were scouting for roadside bombs and rooftop snipers while riding in a humvee without any doors. One day, my gunner said to me, "Sir, what are we doing here?"Baghdad was a stop on a journey that began for me 15 years ago when I first put on the uniform of the United States Army. My journey took me from ROTC cadet to West Point professor to captain in the 82nd Airborne Division and eventually to the United States Congress. For me, a blue-collar kid from a row house in northeastPhiladelphia, this was the chance to not only serve the country I love, but to live the American dream. When I returned fromIraq, I realized we didn't just need change over there, we also needed to change how we treat our veterans here at home. For eight long years, we've had a president who rushed to stand with soldiers at political rallies but abandoned them at Walter Reed. We've had a president who spent billions on private contractors but not on body armor for our troops. We've had a president who was there for the photo ops, but AWOL when it came to doing right by our veterans. It is time for a change. In the Army, we have a saying: "Lead, follow or get out of the way." It is time for a president who leads. And it's time for a commander-in-chief who knows that leadership means serving our troops as well as they serve our country. Barack Obama will be that commander-in-chief. With a grandfather who marched in General Patton's army, Senator Obama understands the needs of our nation and our military. That's why he led the fight to end the injustice at Walter Reed and end homelessness among our veterans. That's why he led the fight to make sure that returning veterans get the mental health care they deserve. And that's why I am proud to stand with him as he leads the fight for a smarter and tougher foreign policy, so that we can finally end the war in Iraq, go after the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 and defeat them where they are strongest, inAfghanistan. Our brave men and women in uniform and our great country cannot afford more of the same. It is time for the change our troops, our veterans and our country need. It is time for Barack Obama. As many have already found out the Battles Aren't Over and we Veterans of our past conflicts and failed leadership policies are there with you, fighting alongside!! And Success Veterans March, Deliver Letter to Obama Campaign Member of Rage Against Machine join procession as it makes four-mile, four-hour trek to Pepsi Center “We’re unique,” Earl said. “We have the credentials to back us up. We’re soldiers.” Members of IVAW said they were committed to having a peaceful protest. Earl said the groups was lucky that the police were willing to work with them and escort them throughout the march. Word soon circulated that Obama’s campaign agreed to meet in a more strategic place. Lt. Vince Porter of the Denver Police Department said the department coordinated the meeting with the secret service and Obama’s office. The two sides finally met about half an hour after plans for a meeting were announced to a chorus of cheers, Porter said, at the same intersection where the protest ended. Matt Chandler, spokesman with Obama For America campaign in Colorado, confirmed that campaign's veterans outreach director did meet with representatives from the march. "He was able to accept the letter from them," Chandler said. "He was able to talk to them a little bit." And so the march, the largest protest of the DNC so far, came to a peaceful conclusion.
