Did McCain lift POW story from Russian novelist? I SAY ‘DA, ETTA PRAVDA’ (YEAH)

+Recommend this blog Did McCain lift POW story from Russian novelist? I SAY ‘DA, ETTA PRAVDA’ (TIS TRUE)
The Raw Story piece below questions whether or not John McCain ripped-off the late Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to form the basis of a yarn he’s been spinning (in conflicting versions) about his own POW internment. McCain has rehashed this “cross in the dirt” tale as recently as last Saturday night (16 August) at Rick Warren’s Faith Forum. Did McCain ad lift ‘cross in the dirt’ story from Russian novelist? RAW STORYPublished: Sunday August 17, 2008 Senator John McCain (R-AZ), in a Christmas-themed December ad for his presidential campaign, told the following story: "One night, after being mistreated as a POW, a guard loosened the ropes binding me, easing my pain. On Christmas, that same guard approached me, and without saying a word, he drew a cross in the sand. We stood, wordlessly, looking at the cross, remembering the true light of Christmas. I'll never forget that no matter where you are, no matter how difficult the circumstances, there will always be someone who will pick you up." "It just sounded so fake and so contrived, so I did a little research about it," said DailyKos contributor rickrocket. The research revealed a similar story by recently departed novelist and McCain favorite Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, recounting his experience in a Soviet gulag in The Gulag Archipelago, released in the United States in 1973. Luke Veronis, in The Sign of the Cross, recounts: "Along with other prisoners, he worked in the fields day after day, in rain and sun, during summer and winter. His life appeared to be nothing more than backbreaking labor and slow starvation. The intense suffering reduced him to a state of despair. On one particular day, the hopelessness of his situation became too much for him. He saw no reason to continue his struggle, no reason to keep on living. His life made no difference in the world. So he gave up. Leaving his shovel on the ground, he slowly walked to a crude bench and sat down. He knew that at any moment a guard would order him to stand up, and when he failed to respond, the guard would beat him to death, probably with his own shovel. He had seen it happen to other prisoners. As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work. As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible. Solzhenitsyn slowly rose to his feet, picked up his shovel, and went back to work. Outwardly, nothing had changed. Inside, he had received hope." [The above article includes embedded video of Senator McCain's ad, as posted to YouTube by his campaign on December 20, 2007] Randy Abel’s comment: One could argue that the similarities are merely coincidence, but such an argument might have more traction were it not for McCain’s claims to being a big Solzhenitsyn fan. I think it’s worth noting as well that there are also current legal actions raising questions concerning the McCain campaign’s lack of respect for intellectual property rights. The Ohio and national Republican committees are being sued by singer Jackson Browne, a lifelong liberal who’s accusing them of unlawfully using his song “Running on Empty,” for the background soundtrack of a McCain ad. Browne’s lawsuit is contending that the group ABBA and singer John Cougar Mellencamp are among other artists who “have asked McCain to stop using their work.” While Browne and the other musicians can present legal evidence proving their cases against McCain and his minions, there seems to be no sure way of verifying that McCain and Solzhenitsyn didn’t share remarkably similar, transcendent religious experiences during their periods of captivity. However, McCain has been telling this story for a while, and has claimed a kinship with Solzhenitsyn based on the link of imprisonment, so he’s had plenty of time to familiarize himself with the Russian author’s body of work. As DailyKoz blogger Throwing Stones points out: The big question: Why wouldn't you reference Alexander Solzhenitsyn when telling this story, even when you've written that "he was a writer with unusual gifts, utterly devoted to his art, brilliant and exacting, producing work that would stun not just literary worlds but the entire Cold War political world." […] You and Alexander Solzhefrickingnitsyn have this incredible shared experience of being imprisoned , having someone draw a cross in the dirt, it inspires you and you don't publicize it? You don't talk about it? You don't write about it even as you write specifically about Solzhenitsyn and your admiration of him. Given the lies McCain has already disseminated concerning his POW experience, these recent revelations come as no surprise. I think we can add this bit of anecdotal theivery to the long list of strikes against any case that might be made for the presumptive candidate’s presumed ethical integrity.
