McCain hip-deep into Georgia lobbyist pocket
40 recommendation(s).
+Recommend this blog McCain’s top foreign policy advisor: a lobbyist for Georgia. _ This morning, Washington Post reported that Senator John McCain’s top foreign policy advisor, Randy Scheunemann of Orion Strategies (a two-man lobbying firm that included Scheunemann and Mike Mitchell) had signed a $200,000 contract to provide strategic advice and lobbying support to the Republic of Georgia. _The report noted how Scheunemann eased the path for an April 17 phone call between the presumptive Republican candidate and Mikheil Saakashvilli, president of Georgia, and whom McCain refers to as a “close friend.” . _According to Justice Department forms filed by the lobbyists, Scheunemann relied on his access to McCain, and that 71 phone conversations and meetings with the Arizona senator were made on behalf of Orion’s clients, including Georgia. _ The calls centered on Georgia's endeavors to become a NATO member, and on Washington legislation, co-sponsored by the senior senator from the Grand Canyon State that endorsed Georgia’s stand on South Ossetia. _ The Washington Post also reported “Another measure lobbied by Orion and co-sponsored by McCain, the NATO Freedom Consolidation Act of 2006, would have authorized a $10 million grant for Georgia” and that “Between Jan. 1, 2007, and May 15, 2008, the campaign paid Scheunemann nearly $70,000 to provide foreign policy advice. _ During the same period, the government of Georgia paid his firm $290,000 in lobbying fees.” _ Justice Department files disclose that since 2004, Orion has collected $800,000 from the government of Georgia. _ The very critical question raised by such arrangements goes directly to what level of foreign policy independence a US president can (and must) be expected to exert, given that he (or she), along with an administration senior staff member, has a long-standing financial relationship and a foreign country. This is not some minor matter. Whether and to what extent might American military assistance, our blood, our treasure, be provided to that country? The American public has an absolute right to know, and to believe there exists nothing other than America's interests that are being weighed in such a decision. — Ed Tubbs Reno, NVRead more | 0 comments
WHO ARE BUSH AND CONDI KIDDING? COMMENTARY BY BILL CORCORAN
McCain tilts at windmills, but doesn't have much other use for them.

+Recommend this blog John McCain tilts at windmills, but doesn’t have much other use for them.
For personal edification purposes only: tune in from time to time to Rush, or to Bill, or one of the other waaayyy on the Right evidence-free radio talk programs. Not to hear what the host is blathering. You know what toxic foam is cascading from their mouths. But to hear the slop your relatives and associates have purchased, and are shoveling. (I will not demean you by presuming you have any ‘friends’ who do their shopping in those malls.) I’ve a news flash: There are no Olympic events for ‘Stupid’ or ‘Ignorant.’ So Americans can quit trying to take that gold, though I’m confident that if there were such competitions we’d be setting new world records. By every recent poll, Americans are split fairly evenly between John McCain and Barack Obama. By definition that says approximately half claim to be supporters of McCain. And that, again by definition, is evidence manifest that somewhere around 50% of Americans are vying for top honors (??) in the competitions I just noted are not being held this year. It’s been more than a month since I received my “McCain — Bush’s 3d Term” bumper sticker. I haven’t put it on my car, and won’t. One, I don’t like sticking anything on my car that actually sticks. Two, the suggestion contained in the message is completely unfair . . . to George Bush! As horrific as W has been, as completely obtuse as he’s proven himself to be, as incredibly ignorant as we ever imagined a president could possibly be, George W. Bush is demonstrably so superior to John McCain for every standard, including basic integrity, that to suppose there’s equivalence between the two disparages the 43d president. The senior senator from Arizona has proposed building “49 new nuclear power plants,” as a means to energy independence. He, along with the GOP and the aforementioned radio hosts, has long claimed that the only thing standing in the way has been the Democratic Party’s “tree-hugging” congress members. Pure S**T! (An oxymoron, I know, but I’m using “pure” in its really smelly unadulterated sense.) The real reasons why no nuke has been constructed in 30 years include a total lack of financial backing for projects that take 10 years and $5 billion minimum to complete, and the odds are insufficient that such a facility would ever turn a dime in profit. And referring back to S**T, like it or not, it happens. Bridges collapse. Trains derail. Leaks spring. And the spent rods that get shipped by rail from those power plants are the kinds of 10,000 year half-life S**T you do not want blocking your commute to work. McCain has said he has “no problem” filling Nevada’s Yucca Mountain with the stuff. But an interesting problem that John has not given much attention to derives from the fact that you’ve got to move the nuclear waste from a yet-to-be-determined Point A to Yucca Mountain. I spent three decades living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Piedmont, just above Oakland, used to be a hilly community of lush landscaping. I was in Piedmont, for three weeks earlier this summer. The hills are still there. But not so much the lush landscaping. Many, many yards have fallen brown because of a severe and protracted water shortage. (Stern Warning: Do NOT even think about washing your car in your drive!!! Yes, the situation is that serious.) That highlights another of the reasons no nukes have been constructed. Nothing consumes water quite like a nuclear power plant. And if anyone wants to know about water, all they need do is ask anyone in the West; even a Republican. No! Especially a Republican from one of the western states. Everything that lands on dinner tables across America began with water. From the Columbia fisheries to the Yakima Valley to the Imperial Valley, from the Salinas Valley to the Rockies . . . we’re running low to out, and water wars are raging in our federal courts. Ranchers are screaming. Farmers are screaming. Fishermen are screaming. Residential and commercial developers are screaming. And home owners are being warned: use more than your allotted share and you face serious financial penalties, perhaps even cutoff. From sea to shining sea, our lake levels are dropping. Lake Meade. Lake Powell. Lake Tahoe. Even Lake Superior. Understand this, no one is going to begin one plan for a project that will take 10 years to complete and require from $5 to $10 billion, if after all of that the chances are slim there will be available even one bucket of water to cool that really red-hot S**T. No plants are going to built in the West, where there isn’t today the water that would be necessary. That means, somewhere in the East. And that completes the Point A to Yucca Mountain circle of reasons. But you know: I saw the video; John McCain telling the gathered in Michigan of “his” plans on behalf of a solution. And I saw the nods, “Yup Vern, the man’s got a ‘plan’ ahll right.” “And the gold medals for ‘Stupid’ and ‘Ignorant’ go to . . .” Wait, there’s more. John McCain is running a political ad during the airing of the Olympics that feature whirling wind turbines. The message is clear: John McCain is all about renewable energy, and the role it will play in a McCain administration toward solving America’s energy crisis. The presumptive GOP candidate recently tried persuade the Harley convention crowd how determined he was about working on a total energy program that he exhorted them to call their representatives to “come back [to Washington] and get to work!” That from a senator who has missed 59.2% of all Senate votes. That from a senator who, far and away, has the poorest voting record; even missed more votes than Senator Tim Johnson who was out 10 months recovering from a near fatal brain aneurism! That from a senator who has missed all eight energy legislation votes this past year! ALL EIGHT! And he was sitting in his senate office during one of the votes he missed! But did anyone raise these minor issues with the senator? What about Brian Williams? Or Katie Couric? How about Charlie Gibson? Catch anything hard-hitting on the Today Show, or GMA? Perhaps you read an in-depth report of them in your newspaper? Did you see the YouTube of the Michigan nuclear plant employee raising them? Or the Harley dude calling McCain out? If you saw anything at all, you saw Vern nodding to the coworker at his side, or you saw Big Griz reacting similarly to Chain Saw, standing next to him at the Harley convention. “Yup, Man’s got a plan ahll right.” Senator John McCain has been as reliable as death in his unflinching support of tax subsidies for Big Oil and on behalf of the nuclear power industry. Yet, when it comes to wind and solar . . . they show up in his campaign ads, but he, every bit as reliably as death, does not show up to vote on bills supporting plans and industries that guarantee to be clean, that are 100% safe, and that will provide tens of thousands of jobs for Americans. But, no matter, “Yup, Man’s got a plan ahll right.” Now it’s time, for the awarding of the gold medals. No! I take that back. If you know a Vern or a Big Griz or someone like them, it’s time to explain to them (use single-syllable words) that you have some minimal standards for those with whom you will associate, and gold medal contenders for ‘Stupid’ and ‘Ignorant’ fall well below what you’re willing to accept. — Ed Tubbs Reno, NV PS — Of course I welcome responses, those that disagree as well as those that agree. But I’ve got to insist that only those retaining the courage of their convictions to include their real name and the city where they reside, exactly as they would for any letter to the editor, will be read or responded to. Now is the time for all of us to live up to the words and sentiments in our National Anthem. PPS — Once again, whether or not to be an ignorant fool is a completely voluntary choice each of us makes.Read more | 0 comments

McCOLLABORATOR’S PROPAGANDA for N. VIETNAM- Continued
14 recommendation(s).
+Recommend this blog Dr. Fernando Barral for Cuban media, 24 January 1970 [Part two of two. Click here for part one] This document is a transcript of an "exclusive" interview of POW John McCain by Spanish psychiatrist Dr. Fernando Barral. The meeting between Barral and POW McCain [was conducted] away from the POW camp in an office of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations in Hanoi. The interview was published January 24, 1970 in Havana, Cuba. Injuries? “Yes, as a result of colliding with the remains of the plane, I fractured my right leg at the knee, and both arms, the right one in three places. Moreover, I dislocated both shoulders.” When he told me this I superficially examined his ability to move his arms which is almost unrestricted (only he has some difficulty bending his arm all the way). Also his grip is normal. Aside from this, he uses a crutch on the right side only, which shows normal functional ability of the extremity most affected by the traumatism. What happened next? That is, what was the capture itself like? “Well, many people gathered around since it was the center of Hanoi and at midday.” Soldiers, militiamen, or civilians? “I could not determine exactly, because they had removed their clothing in order to take me out of the water.” Well, go on. “From there, they took me to a military hospital in Hanoi, a large hospital where they operated on me and attended to the multiple fractures. I understand I received more than a liter of blood….” Were you the object of any physical or moral violence? “No, although at the time of capture I could sense the people’s hate or indignation, there were no insults or violence of any type. On the contrary, you have seen how I am recovering from my injuries.” [There’s a hand-written DoD message here reading: “There was no waiting of 3-4 days as McCain has claimed.”] But were you not afraid of being the object of violent treatment if you were captured…? “Actually, I never thought I would become a prisoner; therefore those fears never came up.” Did you never think of the possibility of being captured? “No. I was traveling at high altitude. I felt completely safe in the plane.. I am considered one of the best pilots….”[…] What made you join the U.S. Navy? “There was a family reason since I have many relatives in that branch of service. In particular, my grandfather was [unintelligible] in World War II; he was one of those who saw the Japanese sign the act of surrender, and a Naval destroyer bears his name. And my father is also an Admiral; he is Chief of the Pacific Command of the U.S. Armed Forces. Actually, it is a matter of military tradition. Once of my forebears was a colonel in Washington’s independence forces. Another was a general in the war of secession. Thus it was natural for me to follow a military career. Of course my father was not always an admiral; during World War II he was a commander of a submarine. He has been in the Navy since 1927 and has been an admiral since 1965. He holds the highest rank in the Navy. If I had not been downed, I would have become an Admiral at an earlier age than my father. Theoretically, General Abrams is his subordinate….” Theoretically? “Yes, although in practice, because of the importance of this war, Gen. Creighton Abrams receives his orders directly from Washington.” I do not understand this about “in theory and in practice.” I thought that in military life everything is standardized in an inflexible manner…. “Well, look, in fact Abrams is his subordinate but since the Tet offensive of 1968 in view of the gravity of the situation, Abrams instead of asking for instructions from my father, who is in Honolulu, so that he in turn would ask for them from Washington, went directly to Washington for them because the war is here in Vietnam and my father also has Okinawa, Korea, and so forth under his command. That is why, since the war is so important, he receives his instructions directly from Washington. It is a political problem also, not only military.” Well, let us leave these things about political and military aside. They are too complex. At any rate I do not believe that your father likes the situation very much; that his subordinates receive orders directly from above. He makes an expressive gesture but does not go further into the subject; rather he takes a tangent. “Look, my father is a very intelligent person, but… when the bombings of the north began, Johnson asked Abrams’ (as published) opinion, not my father’s because Abrams [is] in Saigon, in the war….” “Now I am going to speak about my wife,” he says spontaneously, “she is not in the armed forces,” he added with a certain humor. “I saw her the last time in August of 1967. At that time I was on the aircraft carrier Forrestal when I fire broke out wich damaged it heavily and it had to be sent for repairs to the United States. At that time I miraculously escaped with my life because I was in my airplane and the two pilots on my left and the two on my right were killed.” How did that happen? “A plane caught fire and one of its rockets went off. This in turn caused other explosions. There were 135 deaths, almost all the airplanes were destroyed and the ship was seriously damaged. As a result of the fire I became famous on TV.” As one who miraculously escaped death, no? “Yes, but in addition I was able to see my family and stay there nearly a month. I then returned this time to the aircraft carrier Oriskany and 1 month later I was shot down.” You said that you were going to talk to me about your wife but you continue on the subject of the war…. He smiles as he becomes aware that he drifted from the subject and adds: “She is very pretty. Before marrying me she was a model for magazines and on TV. We have a 3-year-old girl. When I saw her she was still a baby. She also has two children from a former marriage. She now returned to work as a model on TV.” How did you find out? “I had a letter from her after I became a prisoner.” ?? [as published] “Yes they authorized me to recieve a letter and presents on Christmas Eve and I was able to send greeting cards.” Would you like me to relay a message for you? “If you would be so kind. Tell her I am well, that I wish her happiness, and not to worry about me.” (The address!) “Her name is Carol McCain, Mrs. Carol McCain. She lives in….” It is difficult for me to understand the address and I ask him to write it in my notebook. He writes with his left hand: Mrs Carol McCain, 553 Patio Lane, Orange Park, Florida, USA [address as published]. I explain that I will not see her personally but that I will relay the message. What schooling did you have? I went to the Naval Academy. I took two university majors, electrical engineering and naval architecture. The courses were very difficult; 1,200 of us began and only 400 graduated. Discipline was very strict also. I was also in the Spanish Naval Academy. It was there that I met Prince Carlos, as I said before. When I finished I had two choices; to be a naval officer or a pilot.. I chose to be a pilot. I had to study another year and a half and I graduated in 1958. I trained intensively. I flew many hours in training to become a jet pilot.” Many? “Yes, 4,000. They really demand 200 but I flew 4,000 hours.” ?? [as published] “I wanted to become a test pilot. It is fascinating to test new models.” At any rate the difference between 200 and 4,000 appears to be great. “Well, look, it was because I wanted to be an astronaut. That is why I also engage in a great deal of sports: boxing wrestling, swimming, camping, and so forth.” And what happened? “I had to come to Vietnam.” What is your religion? “I am a Protestant.” Being in captivity, has your faith increased? Do you have hopes for the future? “My beliefs have always been more or less the same intensity. As long as the war lasts I do not have much hope for the future.” He showed himself to be intellectually allert during the interview. From a morale point of view he is not in traumatic shock. He is neither dejected nor depressed. He was able to be sarcastic, and even humorous, indicative of psychic equilibrium. From the moral and idological point of view he showed us he is an insensitive individual without depth, who does not show the slightest concern, who does not appear to have thought about the criminal acts he committed against a population from the almost absolute impunity of his airplane, and that nevertheless those people saves his life, fed him, and looked after his health, and he is now healthy and strong. I believe that he bombed densley populated places for sport. I noted that he was hardened, that he spoke of banal things as if he were at a coctail party. […]Read more | 0 comments
Fellow POW disputes McCain claim- McCOLLABORATOR’S PROPAGANDA for N. VIETNAM

+Recommend this blog Fellow POW disputes McCain claim- McCOLLABORATOR’S PROPAGANDA for N. VIETNAM (Part One of Two. Click here for Part Two) The following passage is from a recent article in which McCain’s fellow POW, Edison Miller, defends himself against the senator’s accusations that Miller, a retired Marine colonel who is anti-war, had collaborated with the North Vietnamese while in captivity. Further below are excerpts from declassified Department of Defense documents showing how McCain himself, in more than 20 interviews with his captors, did casually and repeatedly break his solemn vow to “give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to [his] comrades.” “Irvine POW disputes McCain's Vietnam claim,” by Martin Wisckol, Orange County Register, 12 August 2008 Retired Marine colonel is angered by the presidential candidate's statements that he helped the enemy while the two were in a Vietnamese prison camp. Former Orange County supervisor Edison Miller is lashing out at John McCain, saying the presidential candidate falsely fingered him as a turncoat who was "actively aiding the enemy" while the two were imprisoned during the Vietnam War. "He lied about me," said the Irvine resident, who retired as a Marine Corps colonel shortly after the war. "The attacks on my character and integrity are totally without merit or justification. I did stand up and say the war was wrong. I would speak against the war, but I never spoke against my country. And I gave up no secrets." In McCain's book, "Faith of My Fathers," the Republican presidential candidate writes about two "camp rats" who "had lost their faith completely." "They not only stopped resisting but apparently crossed a line no other prisoner I knew had even approached," McCain wrote. "They were collaborators, actively aiding the enemy." While McCain did not name the two in the book, Miller and Walter Eugene Wilber are identified as the POWs in question in a June 15 New York Times story on McCain's 1974 essay about POW traitors. Miller said the newspaper story brought McCain's claims to his attention. […] The following are my transcriptions excerpting four recently-declassified DoD documents which prove McCain’s own collaboration. The introductions before each passage (in bold text) are from VietnamVeteransAgainstJohnMcCain.com, and the links are PDF files of the original documents from their site. Notes in italics are mine, and all other notes in parenthesis, etc. appear as per the originals. For the sake of clarity I’ve highlighted interviewers’ questions in bold. Cuban Radio, 9 November 1967: This document is a transcript of a Hanoi correspondent broadcast to Cuba quoting newly captured POW John McCain detailing U.S. military information about U.S. bombing operations over North Vietnam. The broadcast was transmitted in English on November 09, 1967 and intercepted by U.S. intelligence “My assignment to the Oriskany, I told myself, was due to serious losses in pilots which were sustained by this aircraft carrier due to its raids over North Vietnam territory –VNA) and which necessitated replacements. From 10 to 12 pilots were transferred like me from the Forrestal to the Oriskany. Before I was shot down we had made several sorties. Altogether I made about 23 flights over North Vietnam.” McCain admitted that he participated five or six times in the attacks on the Haiphong sector. Fear still clearly showed on his face when he recalled his disasterous sortie on 26 October against Hanoi. “The briefing was held in the morning. That’s right. I remember that it was in the morning that they told me the situation and the plan of the raid, which should take place about noon. A reconnaissance officer explained this plan to me. They showed me photographs of my target and marked out the paths to be followed by the Oriskany at this point. They pointed out to me a number of antiaircraft positions near Hanoi and a number of possible rocket positions, the position of our rescue ships, the radio frequency, the composition of the flight, and so forth. Upon arrival near the target, our formation order: I would be number three, and the chief of the formation, number one. Each pilot would have to approach the target from a different direction. The choice of which would be left to a different direction, the choice of which could be left to [unintelligible] “While moving toward the target, we stumbled over a very dense network of fire, a very powerful riposte. A few rockets were seen. Our chief turned to approach the target and I followed him at a distance. At the time when I was preparing to drop my bombs — I did not know whether I could drop them because things were happening too fast — I heard a terrible explosion which shook my plane and sent it toward the group. It was hit so violently that I was thrown on my back and went straight toward the ground in this posture. I tried to pull the direction-stick [section redacted] Naturally I felt buffetting because my bailing out was made at the time when the plane was falling too fast. When the parachute opened I looked down and found out that I was going to fall into a lake. I was really lucky to be able to fall into a lake. All around me bombs were exploding while rockets and antiaircraft shells were streaking through the sky. I hit the lake and went to the bottom. While trying to return to the surface, I was seized by Vietnamese and pushed to the bank of the lake. They disarmed me and brought me to prison.” “What do you think of Hanoi’s Fire Barrage?” Asked the Nhan Dan correspondent. “Very intense, very accurate. When a fire barrage is so accurate, one has to reckon with it. You are excellent artillerymen. Naturally, I have never seen such a fire network because it was the first time that I flew over Hanoi.” “Were all the pilots who had flown over Hanoi afraid of the firepower from the ground?” “Yes, Certainly! How lucky are those who do not have to come often to the Hanoi sector. Very dangerous! Because they could very well be shot down, hit, something that no one wants! When I arrived near my target I saw two rockets streaking by my side, and it was terrible to see. They flew very fast, very strongly.” Suddenly the air pirate was silent as if still obsessed by the memory of his disasterous sorite. “For me, there is no longer any doubt. Things are taking place in a favorable opinion. The United States at present seems to be standing alone, so much is its isolation.” French Reporter Francois Chalais, January 1968 This document is a transcript of an "exclusive" interview of newly captured POW John McCain by "prominent" French television reporter Francois Chalais - January 1968. The interview was broadcast in French to Europe. [There’s a note next to the routing info atop this message, hand-written by someone in DoD, reading: “MCCAIN SANG TO FRENCH, ALSO”] My meeting with John Sidney McCain was certainly one of those meetings which will affect me most profoundly for the rest of my life. I had asked the North Vietnamese authorities to allow me to personally interrogate an American prisoner. They authorized me to do so. When night fell, they took me — without precautions or mystery — to a hospital near the Gia Lam Airport reserved for the military. (Passage Omitted) The officer who receives me begins: I ask you not to ask any questions of political nature. If this man replies in a way unfavorable to us, they will not hesitate to speak of “brainwashing” and conclude that we threatened him. (Passage Omitted) This John Sidney McCain McCain is not an ordinary prisoner. His father is none other than Admiral Edmond John McCain, Commander in Chief of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe (Passage Omitted) In a weak voice, he relates his story to me: I was carrying out a bombing mission, my twenty-third raid, over Hanoi. It was then that I was hit. I wanted to eject but while doing so I broke both my arms and my right thigh. Unconscious, I fell in a lake, some Vietnamese jumped into the water and pulled me out. Later I learned there must have been about 12 of them. They immediately took me to the hospital, in a condition two inches away from death. A doctor operated on my thigh. Others at the same time dealt with my arms. How are you treated here? Very well. Everybody is very nice to me. How is the food? He smiles feebly. Obviously, the least reaction hurts him. [McCain’s response:] This isn’t Paris, but it is alright. Do you have something to read? They have suggested that I read, but my hands are unable to hold even a newspaper. His cigarette has gone out. He talks to me about his wife who lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and about his three children. And now he addresses his family: I know that this is going to turn out well. I hope that I will see you soon. […] Broadcast to South Vietnam, 2 June 1969 Transcript of John McCain's June 2, 1969 radio broadcast beamed into South Vietnam in response to Defense Secretary Melvin S. Laird’s [19 May 1969] plea that North Vietnam treat U.S. prisoners according to the humanitarian standards set forth by the Geneva Convention. At his 19 rpt 19 May press conference in Washington, US Defense Secretary Melvin Laird distorted the truth about the policy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam government towards captured U.S. pilots in North Vietnam. Those very captive airmen have long since given the lie to Laird’s allegations. Here is one of them, LCMDR John Sidney McCain, service number 624787 rpt 624787, USS Oriskany, speaking of the treatment he has been receiving. (Male voice with an American accent) “I was a U.S. airman engaged in the crimes against the Vietnamese country and people. I had bombed their cities, towns, and villages and caused more injury even death for the people of Vietnam. After I was captured I was taken from a hospital in (?Da Nang) where I received very good medical treatment. I was given an operation on my leg, which allowed me to walk again, and a cast for my right arm which was badly broken in three rpt three places. The doctors were very good and they knew a great deal about the practice of medicine. I remained in the hospital for some time, I regained much of my health and strength.” Dr. Fernando Barral for Cuban media, 24 January 1970 This document is a transcript of an "exclusive" interview of POW John McCain by Spanish psychiatrist Dr. Fernando Barral. The meeting between Barral and POW McCain [was conducted] away from the POW camp in an office of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations in Hanoi. The interview was published January 24, 1970 in Havana, Cuba. [There’s a note next to the routing info atop this message, hand-written by someone in DoD, reading: “McCAIN TELLS IT IN SPANISH”] The pilot interviewed is John Sidney McCain, son and grandson of American Navy Admirals. His father, as the Yankee prisoner declared, is higher ranking than General Abrams, who commands the Yankee aggressor troops in South Vietnam; despite this, Johnson gave orders directly to Abrams, passing over McCain’s father, who has a long history of services of aggression in Korea, among other imperialist merits. As is seen, Lt Commander John Sidney has a very good name…. Following are the notes from Dr. Barral’s interview with the Yankee Pilot: Could you tell me your name, serial number, and rank? “My name is John Sidney McCain and I am a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy — serial No 624787. I understand and speak some Spanish. I studied it in school and I have been in Spain several times. On one of those occasions I visited the Navy Academy and met Prince Carlos….” In the course of the interview, on various occasions he showed that knowledge of the language, saying some words, dates, and so forth in Spanish, or (using it) when he thought the interpreter was seeking the corresponding French word. Naturally, from the very beginning this established a more direct communication between us, and more than one question or my response was made directly in Spanish. Immediately afterward, I asked him about the date and circumstances of his capture. “On 26 October 1967 I was overflying Hanoi in an A4E plane based on the carrier Oriskany when my plane was hit by a ground-to-air missile. I bailed out, colliding in the air with the remains of the plane, and I landed in one of the lakes in the center of Hanoi, in the middle of the water. On landing I tried to get free of my parachute, but could not move, and did not realize why I could not move my arms or legs, but it was because of the injuries.” [Continued here] Read more | 0 comments
