+Recommend this blog I believe in evidence and the scientific method, and in little to nothing that is without the former or not via the latter. And I believe I must be an optimist, because, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, I continue to believe the American voter can be swayed in a direction when presented with evidence that says he should be. The article below by Greg Palast, perhaps this country’s most pernicious investigative reporter, is essential reading by those who seek legitimate reasons to vote for or against one of the presidential candidates. Those who are content to believe what they believe because they believe it I count among the lower level simians. They are beyond hope, because they already have all they need. In fact, they had all they needed before they engaged the first minute of post-partum life experience. I slight Greg for one highly consequent omission in his argument opposing McCain’s Michigan (Where else for hokum?) postulation that the building of 49 new nukes will demonstrably work to solve this country’s energy dilemma: nuclear power plants devour water as no other industry. So where ya gonna put those plants John, in the wide open spaces in the West, where the supply of H2O is scarcer than Saharan glaciers? Or, maybe the folks in the more populace East wouldn’t mind having football-field-wide nuclear cooling funnels rising next to their elementary schools. “Hey Suzy, I’m just glowing with pride over your grades! North Shore, Long Island] _ I’m guessing it was excessive exposure to either radiation or George Bush, but Senator John McCain’s comments from inside a nuclear power plant in Michigan are so cracked-brained that I fear some loose gamma rays are doing to McCain’s gray matter what they did to Homer Simpson’s. _ On Tuesday, the presumptive Republican candidate descended into the colon of a nuke to declare we need to build 45 new nuclear plants - that this is the way out of our energy crisis. Nuclear power, declared the senator, is a “safe, efficient [and] inexpensive” alternative to oil. _ Really? We can argue all day about whether nuclear plants are safe (they aren’t –period). But there can be no argument whatsoever that these giant radioactive tea-kettles are breathtakingly expensive. _ Nuclear plants are cheap until you actually try to build one. Not one of the last 49 nuclear plants cost less than $2 billion apiece. I’m looking down the road at the remainders of the Shoreham nuclear plant which took nearly 20 years to build at a cost of $8 billion – or close to $7,000 per customer it was supposed to supply. When I say “supposed to,” it was closed for safety reasons after operating just one single day. _ We’re told that the new generation of plants will be different. Just like an alcoholic child-beater, the nuclear plant builders promise us that, “This time it will be different.” Sure. And McCain believes them. _ I don’t. Maybe that’s because I headed the government racketeering investigation of the Shoreham nuclear plant’s builders. Stone & Webster Engineering and its partner paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle the civil racketeering claim over the evidence we found of fraud and perjury. Now Stone & Webster will cash in big-time under Plan McCain. _ The other big builder which will hit the jackpot under the McCain scheme is KBR, the one-time subsidiary of Halliburton, whose best known project is the rebuilding of Iraq. (Halliburton dumped KBR last year. Can’t blame them.) KBR has built many nukes –not one within a mile of its promised cost. _ But that doesn’t bother McCain. So who is McCain getting his energy advice from? I’m looking at a photo of the perplexed senator inside the control room, looking like Homer without a donut, getting a lecture on the wonders of nuclear energy from a power company CEO, one Tony Early. Early is the former President of LILCO, the very corporation the Feds and State of New York charged with civil racketeering. (We did not name Early as a co-conspirator. When the government got him on the witness stand, it was clear the guy was too clueless to recognize he was in the midst of a billion-dollar swindle. McCain’s got quite some team.) _ Now, you Obamaniacs might not want to read this next paragraph: _ While McCain is pushing nuclear power, a Senator from Illinois who shall remain nameless (skinny, just gave up smokes), was already embracing radiation as the solution to pollution. This Senator voted for George Bush’s energy bill, a law which contained massive giveaways to nuclear energy, legislation which diss’es and dismisses conservation. Indeed, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate has been derided as the “Senator from Commonwealth Edison,” the Chicago company which is the nation’s largest operator of nuclear plants – and whose executives were the money backbone to his early presidential campaign. _ So, we’ve got both candidates hawking the nuclear snake oil. But there is one difference between them. A big big BIG difference. _ McCain’s ready to spend a hundred billion dollars on nuclear power, no questions asked. But Barack Obama puts a crucial condition on his approval for building new nukes: an affordable method of disposing the new plants’ radioactive waste. _ That’s not small stuff. While The New York Times reporters following McCain repeated his line about “inexpensive” nuclear power without question, a buried wire story on the same day noted that the Energy Department is putting the unfunded bill for disposing nuclear plant waste at $96.2 billion – nearly a billion dollars per plant operating today. And no one even knows exactly how to do it, or where. Obama has the audacity to ask about the nuclear waste’s cost. “Can we deal with the expense?” he said on Meet the Press. _ McCain’s plan to spend endless billions on nuclear plants without a waste disposal system in place is like building a massive hotel without toilets. I suppose you can always tell the guests to poop in buckets until someone comes up with a plan for plumbing. But the stuff piles up. And unlike the fecal droppings of tourists, nuclear waste will stay hot and dangerous for a thousand generations. _ So there you have our election in a nutshell. We was Kept on the Outposts & Frontiers & had Much Difficulty with the Indians & the Tories (British). After Our Tiems was Out, We returned home. Soon, After My Return, I was a Volunteer, Under Captain McClaim & Served 3-Mnths at Ft. Waddles & Ruphill Forts & on the Lines, as an Indian Spy. I then returned home. We was Principally Under the Orders of Captain Hampton & Captain McDowell. The Last Service, Captain Miller had the Commission. This Service was Performed in years of 1780/ 1781. I can't state the precise months but I Well Remember, the Years. I know I did not serve, less than the four tours mentioned above & not less than 3-months at each time, which made 12-months, that I served in the Revolutionary War & for which Service I Claim a Pension, thereby Relinquish Every Claim to a Pension, except the Present & Declared that His (Thomas Dalton) Name, is NOT on the Pension Roll of the Agency, of Any Other State, Whatsoever. +Recommend this blog McCain takes Michigan, and all that jazz. I was born and raised in a suburb of Detroit; an all-white suburb. I have a sister who still lives there, in that same all-white suburb. If you were to suggest to her that she has even one bigoted cell in her body, you’d be in for a scathing rebuttal. Nonetheless, when her 20-year-old daughter, convicted of a third DUI, was sentenced to time in Wayne County jail, my sister was apoplectic: “She doesn’t belong in there, with ‘those’ people!” By those people, she meant “the blacks;” how the good citizens in the surrounding communities refer to the African-Americans who overwhelmingly compose the population of Detroit. That “other” term is no longer politically available for use. In her defense, without engaging details that are no one’s business, my niece grew up in a home where her father visited extraordinary domestic abuse on the structure of the house, the family, and my sister; an environment that no child should be raised in. Nascent anger and abuse of alcohol, as a minimum, by the young woman could have been predicted. However, that is also every bit as true of those who did not grow up in the suburbs, who grew up in the violence of Detroit’s urban core. But those who were and are raised “there,” who were not racially one of the suburban good citizens get no such pass for misdeeds. They go to jail. They go directly to jail. They don’t pass ‘Go.’ They don’t collect $200.00. And for the majority of the good citizens in the state, that’s not only all right, it’s as it should be. Indeed, it was Dearborn’s long-serving and many times reelected mayor, Orville Hubbard, who cruised to every election victory on the unabashed pledge to “keep Dearborn white.” For those who do not know, Dearborn abuts Detroit, is the world headquarters of Ford Motor Company, and is yet the site of the world’s largest auto manufacturing plant, the Ford Rouge. It was the UAW and the other industrial unions that integrated the workplace. Neither the UAW nor any other union had or have the capacity to change social mores, however. Political pundits have correctly described Michigan as a blue-collar state; code for not especially socially advanced or well educated, which translates as high school only — the base of John McCain’s support. It doesn’t matter that the Arizona senator has a philandering past, or that Senator Obama’s lacks the first hint of anything short of steadfast fidelity to his wife and to his daughters. It doesn’t matter that John McCain ditched one beauty who turned out not to be pretty enough, or wealthy enough, in order to wed one who evidently fit those categories exceptionally well. It doesn’t matter that John McCain was a child of privilege, getting into private schools and the Naval Academy that were exclusively the result of who his grandfather and father was, or that Barack Obama’s educational excellence was by dint of his personal excellence and student loans. It doesn’t matter that Senator McCain has been caught repeatedly in lies and his positions have been muddled and meandering across the map, while those of his opponent have been without the taint intentional falsification, and have been fairly consistent and thoughtfully composed. It doesn’t matter that, contrary to his loud postulations of support of the military, Senator McCain has absolutely voted 100% of the time against the health and safety of America’s soldiers and marines, and against expansion or improvement of veterans’ health and educational benefits, or that Senator Obama has consistently voted for the health and safety of those serving actively and for expansion and improvement of all veterans’ benefits. It doesn’t even matter that Senator McCain has voted with President Bush 95% of the time, or that those votes have inured to the terrible detriment of Americans individually and collectively, or that his espoused policies are the figment of fiction, that they augur to no improvement in any circumstance of any citizen not among the super wealthy. Individually and collectively we are worse off than we were seven and one-half years ago and via McCain nothing is likely to get better! Nope. None of that matters. Because in Michigan, and in the other Rust-belt states like it, and in the South, while few will openly confess to racial bigotry, they fish the muddied waters of their souls for explanations — “I just don’t trust Obama,” or, “He doesn’t have the ‘experience,’” though they just can’t seem to define that term with anything approaching precision — why they will not support the Illinois senator and why they do support John McCain. But you and I know: Barack Obama is one of “those” people. And in the seclusion of the voting booth . . . At the start of the war, U.S. officials argued that Iraq's possession and further pursuit of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) posed an imminent threat to the security and interests of the United States, Europe and the other nations of the Middle East. This intelligence was supported by British intelligence Furthermore, Russian intelligence linked Iraq with terrorism and Germany gave intelligence assistance in the preparation of the war. Neither, however, confirmed the claims of WMD in Iraq.. The intelligence, especially concerning WMD, received criticism, and weapons inspectors found no evidence of WMD After the invasion, the Iraq Survey Group concluded that Iraq had ended its WMD programs in 1991 and had no active programs at the time of the invasion, but that they intended to resume production if and when the Iraq sanctions were lifted Although some earlier degraded remnants of misplaced or abandoned WMD were found, they were not the weapons for which the coalition invaded Some U.S. officials accused Saddam Hussein of harboring and supporting Al-Qaeda , but no evidence of any collaborative relationship has been found.Other reasons for the invasion stated by officials included Iraq's financial support for the families of Palestinian suicide bombers, Iraqi government human rights abuses, spreading democracy,and Iraq's oil reserves, although the latter has been denied by other officials.
The invasion led to the quick defeat of the Iraqi military, the flight of President Saddam Hussein, his capture in December 2003 and his execution in December 2006. The U.S.-led coalition occupied Iraq and attempted to establish a new democratic government. But shortly after the initial invasion, violence against coalition forces and among various sectarian groups led to asymmetric warfare with the Iraqi insurgency, strife between many Sunni and Shia Iraqi groups, and al-Qaeda operations in Iraq. Estimates of the number of people killed range from over 150,000 to more than one million. Member nations of the Coalition began to withdraw their forces as public opinion favoring troop withdrawals increased and as Iraqi forces began to take responsibility for security. Thirteen months after the beginning of the Iraq troop surge of 2007 the U.S. Department of Defense has claimed "the security, political and economic trends in Iraq continue to be positive; however, they remain fragile, reversible and uneven. -----------------------------------------------------
