This Memorial Day Make the Press Cover Veterans' Issues Full Time

Veterans and war are often reduced to two holidays in the eyes of civilians and reporters: Veterans Day and Memorial Day.  There are no reporters covering the Department of Veterans Affairs and veterans' issues full time.  The failure to cover the human and financial consequences of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars must change now.

This weekend, MSNBC / Newsweek offers you, the citizen, and opportunity to tell reporters what you think should be covered.  Here is our chance to flood them with requests that the national press corp devote equal coverage to the problems facing veterans when they return home from war.

At this link, MSNBC / Newsweek aks for your input on important issues.  Give them an earful about the needs and concerns of our fellow citizens -- our veterans.  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18826755/

Here is what I wrote to MSNBC / Newsweek, which also shares news with the Washington Post.  The questions are pre-written by MSNBC:

1. What issue facing our country today is most important to you or has the greatest impact on you, your family and neighbors?

Veterans are our fellow citizens who stand between a bullet and our Constitution.  They guard civilians in our democracy from the horrors of tyranny and anarchy.  Therefore, healthcare and disability benefits for our wounded, injured, and ill Iraq War and Afghanistan War veterans should be a top issue that can unite Americans after a terribly divisive war.  The U.S. has deployed, so far, 1.5 million service members to the two wars.  Of those, 250,000 are now being treated at Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers, including 185,000 for readjustment problems.  Another 180,000 filed disability claims against VA.

Sadly, our veterans wait six months for answers from VA.  This is too long.  There are 200,000 homeless veterans on the street every night, including up to 1,000 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans where we failed to honor our social contract to care for them after their return home from battle.  There is a "gap" in services for our veterans - a crack that tens of thousands of new veterans fell into after they left the military and before their VA healthcare and benefits began.

2. How does it affect you, your friends or loved ones? Tell us your story, and please be specific:

As a Gulf War veteran who worked at VA and used to monitor the casualties from the two current wars, I now provides advocacy for veterans.  My daily life is filled with efforts to monitor and assist our returning veterans so that the terrible failures of the Vietnam War and Gulf War, especially the lack immediate access to healthcare and disability benefits, can be avoided.

No veteran should ever have to wait to see a doctor or get disability payments for a war-related medical problem.  No veteran, especially one with traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder, should be forced to complete a 23-page form to obtain assistance when the DoD should be able to push a button and share records with VA.  No veteran should ever be homeless in the richest nation on earth.  I resigned from the government in 2006 to highlight this problem an our government's inaction, and now the world knows about Walter Reed scandal, the VA bonus scandal, and the bureaucratic nightmares veterans face at VA.

3. What do you think should be done to "fix" this problem?

Just like the tremendously successful GI Bill after World War II, we can learn the lesson from the tragic Bonus Army march of 1932.  First, there must be awareness, and the media and Congress have raised the alarm in the past few months.  Harvard Professor Linda Bilmes presented a study in January 2007 where she found that the total human and financial cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars over the next 40 years will be up to 700,000 veteran patients and $700 billion.  We can pay taxes now to assist veterans.  Or, we can let the crisis worsen, and it will cost far more.

In order to "close the gap" now, the Department of Defense and VA must immediately provide free access to healthcare for wounded veterans for six months for those not placed in DoD's medical retirement program.  And VA should provide automatic approval for disability claims, at a modest amount, for up to six months, and then audit claims for accuracy.  This way, the "gap" between DoD and VA can be bridged, and fewer veterans will fall into chronic unemployment, suffer broken families, endure homelessness, or become addicted to drugs and alcohol.

To make your submission to MSNBC / Newsweek, go to this link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18826755/

This is your chance to influcence the national media from the grassroots level on issues important to you.  VCS selcted veterans.  You can pick your own, including civil liberties, national security, and views about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Knowing the numbers is the first step in solving the problem. 500,000 + veterans Homeless, 500,000 + veterans on VA wait list, 150,000 in state and federal prison 12,000 + a year in suicides, when adding these numbers a better understanding of the extent of this problem is put into perspective lets add all the numbers that are very much a part of this mental health problem.

I've been in and out of the VA the last year, I have documentation of malpractice, fraud, destroying medical records, misleading the public.

I have the documents, I was a health care provider giving over 30,000 anesthetics, before PTSD just consumed me. The real veterans want to help these young ones, I don't want them living life for 30-40 years wondering what makes them different, when they need to be told it's they care too much for their fellow man deep down. The VA gets around recognizing PTSD by having unsqualified personnel and treating the symptoms of PTSD as the problem. I know since being medicated for PTSD I've not even thought or desire alcohol or even wanted to bet on ballgames. Compulsions that are symptoms. SOMEBODY HEAR MY CRY AND LET ME HELP BY USING MY INFORMATION!!!!!! Philip R. Dr. Doug Rokke
Depleted Uranium Situation Worsens Requiring Immediate Action

By President Bush, Prime Minister Blair, and Prime Minister Olmert Dr. Doug Rokke, PhD. former Director, U.S. Army Depleted Uranium project December 8, 2006 The delivery of at least 100 GBU 28 bunker busters bombs containing depleted uranium warheads by the United States t and their use by Israel against Lebanese targets has resulted in additional radioactive and chemical toxic contamination with consequent adverse health and environmental effects throughout the middle east. Israeli tank gunners are also using depleted uranium tank rounds as photographs verify. Today, U.S., British, and now Israeli military personnel are using illegal uranium munitions- America's and England's own "dirty bombs" while U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense, and British Ministry of Defence officials deny that there are any adverse health and environmental effects as a consequence of the manufacture, testing, and/or use of uranium munitions to avoid liability for the willful and illegal dispersal of a radioactive toxic material - depleted uranium. The use of uranium weapons is absolutely unacceptable, and a crime against humanity. Consequently the citizens of the world and all governments must force cessation of uranium weapons use. I must demand that Israel now provide medical care to all DU casualties in Lebanon and clean up all DU contamination. U.S. and British officials have arrogantly refused to comply with their own regulations, orders, and directives that require United States Department of Defense officials to provide prompt and effective medical care to "all" exposed individuals. Reference: Medical Management of Unusual Depleted Uranium Casualties, DOD, Pentagon, 10/14/93, Medical Management of Army personnel Exposed to Depleted Uranium (DU) Headquarters, U.S. Army Medical Command 29 April 2004, and section 2-5 of U.S. Army Regulation 700-48. Israeli officials must not do so now. They also refuse to clean up dispersed radioactive Contamination as required by Army Regulation- AR 700-48: "Management of Equipment Contaminated With Depleted Uranium or Radioactive Commodities" (Headquarters, Department Of The Army, Washington, D.C., September 2002) and U.S. Army Technical Bulletin- TB 9-1300-278: "Guidelines For Safe Response To Handling, Storage, And Transportation Accidents Involving Army Tank Munitions Or Armor Which Contain Depleted Uranium" (Headquarters, Department Of The Army, Washington, D.C., JULY 1996). Specifically section 2-4 of United States Army Regulation-AR 700-48 dated September 16, 2002 requires that: (1) "Military personnel "identify, segregate, isolate, secure, and label all RCE" (radiologically contaminated equipment). (2) "Procedures to minimize the spread of radioactivity will be implemented as soon as possible." (3) "Radioactive material and waste will not be locally disposed of through burial, submersion, incineration, destruction in place, or abandonment" and (4) "All equipment, to include captured or combat RCE, will be surveyed, packaged, retrograded, decontaminated and released IAW Technical Bulletin 9-1300-278, DA PAM 700-48" (Note: Maximum exposure limits are specified in Appendix F). DOD leaders are not showing the DU training tapes to military personnel. These three video tapes: (1) "Depleted Uranium Hazard Awareness", (2) "Contaminated and Damaged Equipment Management", and (3) "Operation of the AN/PDR 77 Radiac Set" are essential to understanding the hazards from the use of uranium weapons and management of uranium weapons contamination. DOD leaders must show these tapes to all military personnel involved in the use of uranium weapons and the consequent management of uranium contamination. The previous and current use of uranium weapons, the release of radioactive components in destroyed U.S. and foreign military equipment, and releases of industrial, medical, research facility radioactive materials have resulted in unacceptable exposures. Therefore, decontamination must be completed as required by U.S. Army Regulation 700-48 and should include releases of all radioactive materials resulting from military operations. The extent of adverse health and environmental effects of uranium weapons contamination is not limited to combat zones in the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan but includes facilities and sites where uranium weapons were manufactured or tested including Vieques; Puerto Rico; Colonie, New York; Concord, MA; Jefferson Proving Grounds, Indiana; and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Therefore medical care must be provided by the United States Department of Defense officials to all individuals affected by the manufacturing, testing, and/or use of uranium munitions. Thorough environmental remediation also must be completed without further delay. I am amazed that fifteen years after was I asked to clean up the initial DU mess from Gulf War 1 and over ten years since I finished the depleted uranium project that United States Department of Defense officials and others still attempt to justify uranium munitions use while ignoring mandatory requirements. I am dismayed that Department of Defense and Department of Energy officials and representatives continue personal attacks aimed to silence or discredit those of us who are demanding that medical care be provided to all DU casualties and that environmental remediation is completed in compliance with U.S. Army Regulation 700-48. But beyond the ignored mandatory actions the willful dispersal of tons of solid radioactive and chemically toxic waste in the form of uranium munitions is illegal (http://www.traprockpeace.org/karen_parker_du_illegality.pdf) and just does not even pass the common sense test and according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, DHS, is a dirty bomb. DHS issued "dirty bomb" response guidelines, http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/fr-cont.html , on January 3, 2006 for incidents within the United States but ignore DOD use of uranium weapons and existing DOD regulations. These guidelines specifically state that: "Characteristics of RDD and IND Incidents: A radiological incident is defined as an event or series of events, deliberate or accidental, leading to the release, or potential release, into the environment of radioactive material in sufficient quantity to warrant consideration of protective actions. Use of an RDD or IND is an act of terror that produces a radiological incident." Thus the use of uranium munitions is "an act or terror" as defined by DHS. Finally continued compliance with the infamous March 1991 Los Alamos Memorandum that was issued to ensure continued use of uranium munitions can not be justified. In conclusion: the President of the United States- George W. Bush, the Prime Minister of Great Britain-Tony Blair, and the Prime Minister of Israel Olmert must acknowledge and accept responsibility for willful use of illegal uranium munitions- their own "dirty bombs"- resulting in adverse health and environmental effects. President Bush, Prime Minister Blair, and Prime Minister Olmert should order: 1. medical care for all casualties, 2. thorough environmental remediation, 3. immediate cessation of retaliation against all of us who demand compliance with medical care and environmental remediation requirements, 4. and stop the already illegal the use (UN finding) of depleted uranium munitions. I am so glad that you are filing suit against the Dept. of Veteran's Affairs. My husband went to Viet Nam as a pilot, came back and after a period of time development seizure disorder and skin eruptions on his legs, arms, and face. Was taken off flying status which meant his career in the AF was basically over and then to add insult to injury was given 10% disability. In the civilian world you can collect disability but the military you have to fight for everything and the Pentagon and VA worked against the very men that they send into harm's way. This has affected our family in every way a sickness like this can.

If the DVA was not wasteing money on phoney client load Veteran centers, they would have more funds to run the true client count services.

At Veteran center the staff fill out the forms for the veterans, and they fill em out OFTEN.

Bravo! What the VA is doing and has done is nothing short of criminal. I have always contended that the so-called physicians who are part of the VA system are one step above tribal shamans...and in some instances, are considered peers. I hope you win. The men and women who fight for this country and then are denied the heroic honors and benefits they have coming should be paid handsomely. The families of 9/11 have done nothing to earn a cent. The brave men and women of the military who are returning home should be embraced with every possible benefit they have coming and then some. They should at least have the same compensation as 9/11 families!

We need to bring the young children home. I saw this in the 60"s when I was attending college. Now, as an older generation American again. We have a little Hitler running this country. I am a kindergarten teacher. If I could protect my young like a mother bear protects her cubs I would. We need to build a shield of protection around our country and keep our children home. US military occupation forces in Iraq suffered at least 230 combat casulties in the week ending July 3, as total casualties reached at least 57,274.The total includes 29,508 killed or wounded by what the Pentagon classifies as "hostile" causes and 27, 739 (as of June 2) more dead and injured from "non-hostile" causes such as accidents, suicides (111) and illness serious enough to require medical evacuation.

US media divert attention from the actual cost in American life and limb by routinely reporting only the total killed (3,586 as of July 3) and rarely mentioning the 26,558 wounded in combat. To further minimize public perception of the cost, they cover for the Pentagon by ignoring the 27,103 military victims who suffered "non-hostile" injuries and illness (through June 2), although the 3,586 reported deaths include 636 (up one from from last week) who died from those same causes. AP writer Marilynn Marchione noted that "counting the wounded can be contentious" when she broke the silence in the mainstream media about the "27,103 non battle-related air transports." While the Pentagon tries to argue these are not war related, Marchione quotes Harvard economist Linda Bilmes that "an accident that happens [in Iraq] is a cost of war" as is mental or physical illness and will cost as much to treat as any injury suffered in combat. (Oregonian, June 24). Although not defined as "casualties" since they have been discharged from active duty, as of the end of 2006 more than 180,000 U.S. military veterans of Iraq and Afganistan had filed disability claims. Reuters http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070703/pl_nm/usa_iraq_contractors_dc_2;_ylt=AoVMr7iwN2hpZwin8BZK5eME1vAI had to force the US Labor dept under the FOIA to provide new numbers on US contractor casualties. Employees of US companies in Iraq total about the same as members of the military. The Reuters report counts 11,502 contractor casualties in Iraq (933 dead as of June 30; 10,569 wounded as of March 31), plus another 2,503 contractor casualties (75 dead, 2428 wounded) in Afganistan. Of the total 1,008 dead contractors, 224 were US citizens, and the rest foreign nationals--including everyone from food service workers to military mercenaries.

Carl Rover the Nazi WH DOG should be dragged before Congress to answer for the outing of a covert CIA operative working on WMD and Terrorist cells bothe here and around the world. The time has come and and as Patriotic Americans we should demand answers. The Oval Office Nazi annunciates that he backs the troops and that only Nazi Christian conservative republicans support our warriors, however when it came to a 3% pay hike amounting to a mere 200.00 dollars he stated that this was asling for too much! Here we have The Decider Nazi telling the troopers to take a hike and thumbing his YELLOW AWOL nose at those that he sent to WAR on a LIE!!!! How much is enough Mr. Nazi Decider, 1.00 dollar and the remaining 199.00 goes to your GREEDY friends in the form of Vote buying TAX CUTS I for one BEG for Impeachment proceedings immediately, win or lose the message shall catch the attention of all that reside within THE PEOPLES HOUSE, As for the Nazi republicans within every chamber of this Congress the people have another message 36% stated in a CBS poll that they support you, by the time 08' rolls around you Nazi bastards shall become endangered species and we all know how Oxy Codine Rush feels about the snail darter! LOL! Can you Nazi pond scum utter well done? Practice it for it shall be a requirement for both Nazi's and the Snail darter!! If you care for our form of Government prior to these Nazi's taking office again then I ask that you call your Congressperson and demand Impeachment of one and all that Lied us into this quagmire called Iwaq!

Inherent contempt Under this process, the procedure for holding a person in contempt involves only the chamber concerned. Following a contempt citation, the person cited for contempt is arrested by the Sergeant-at-Arms for the House or Senate, brought to the floor of the chamber, held to answer charges by the presiding officer, and then subject to punishment that the House may dictate (usually imprisonment for punishment reasons, imprisonment for coercive effect, or release from the contempt citation.) Concerned with the time-consuming nature of a contempt proceeding and the inability to extend punishment further than the session of the Congress concerned (under Supreme Court rulings), Congress created a statutory process in 1857. While Congress retains its "inherent contempt" authority and may exercise it at any time, this inherent contempt process has not been exercised by either House in over 70 years. These are all TOLL FREE NUMBERS, there is no excuse for not calling, unless you support a Fascist Dicider! Have your friends call! In 1980, I opposed Reagan, that Second Nazi (Nixon was the First), when others were praising a total fucken loser Reagoon! This so called War is nothing more than another way to break Social Security. Real patriots can see through the facade that Nazi Christian Conservative Republicans have hidden behind, along with the Flag! Your correct hind sight, as always, benefits those who fail to look in that mirror! I am PISSED at EVERY BASTARD that voted for these Nazi's from Reagoon to the current Nazi! I have no faith in Clinton and despise both him and Hillary and shall not vote for her or Obama, since they are perennial losers! MY PART???? WHAT CAN WE DO??? The question is more like, what you should have done since the eighties! Have a great day, and remember hind sight is equivalent to being blind!Impeachment is the only answer to Americas problems! Please call these toll free numbers and Demand that bush's girlfriend Pelosi place Impeachment on the Table and use it NOW!
