Do you think what the Democrats did to Paul Hackett that the Party lost credibility on the Number One Issue facing the Nation = Iraq
Posted By Bobby Hanafin, Major, USAF-Ret at 10:20 AM

"Hackett brought credibility on the No. 1 issue facing the nation -- the war in Iraq," said Jon Soltz, an Iraq combat veteran and executive director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Political Action Committee. "The Democratic Party loses credibility on that issue because he is no longer running, and because they had a hand in his decision."

In clarifying Indy Thinker’s last post, what the Major meant to say was. Not wanting my fellow Veterans and Military family members to misunderstand my support for “candidate” Sherrod Brown as in anyway defense of what the Democratic Party at either national or especially Ohio level did. That is not the case.
The point of the last post was that several strong opposition candidates to NEOCON Republican candidates in Ohio to include an Iraq Veteran are ideal. Having Paul Hackett run for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District where he almost beat Jean Schmidt and could most likely do it again while having a more experienced “politician” run for Senate makes common sense.
Brothers and sisters Bobby “Indy Thinker” Hanafin personally dealt with the Ohio Democratic Party during the 2004 election. They under Denny White are the most incompetent bunch in the 50 states. (My humble opinion based on experience and observation and not of course a positon nor opinion of VCS)
Understanding that White had moved on hopefully someone with half a brain had moved into manage strategy and tactics in the ODP. Evidently, they still do not understand how to treat Veterans.
My wife and I witnessed this when we attended the Democratic National Convention (DNC) as Ohio Delegates. They were more respectful toward big money delegate Jerry Springer than any Veterans who were delegates. But of course we were the first Republicans to ever attend the DNC as Ohio delegates. We may vote Democrat but never again waste our money as a DNC delegate (nevermore). Been there done that and did not like the Kerry/Edwards mug.
Anyway, suffice it to say Indy Thinker is not defending the Democrats only saying for folks to take a closer look at Sherrod Brown. Just do not write him off because he is a Democrat. Do not blame Brown because he belongs to a party administered by dummies. That is the nature of the beast. What are the alternatives?
What confuses me about this situation is why Hackett cannot run? What is stopping him? Paul Hackett really does not need the Democratic Party to run. Paul has done pretty well on his own without the party blessing thus far. Why not run as an Independent or Libertarian for that matter. Hell if so many of you out there are that passionate and upset about what has been done to Paul Hackett then organize a Let’s Draft Paul Hackett for Congress or President Campaign (HINT).
On Tuesday, soon after Hackett said he was quitting politics, the largest liberal Internet organization, MoveOn.org, notified its 3.3 million members of a new strategy: working to oust conservative Democratic incumbents.
Hackett said he had ended his 11-month political career. It reached its zenith last summer when his House campaign in a conservative Cincinnati-area district raised $850,000 in two months, $500,000 of it through blogs.
Since I claim to be a resident amateur on Ohio politics having been to a delegate to the DNC and all, let me edumacate you a little on Ohio politics.

HARDLY ANY CANDIDATE SOUTH OF COLUMBUS IS ENDORSED BY THE GOOFBALLS WHO RUN THE OHIO DEMOCRATIC PARTY ANYWAY FOR THE REASONS NICK STATES BELOW – They are Independent Thinking Candidates.

No one on Paul Hackett’s campaign staff has figured that out YET.

I was Veteran/Military Affairs advisor to a Democratic candidate in Ohio’s seventh Congressional District during the 2004 election that also did not have the state or national parties’ endorsement. She lost the election but ended up with 100,617 or 35.04% of the vote. Tell me whoever heard of Kara Anastasio?

Check out this LINK to Ohio election results for 2004:

http://www.sos.state.oh.us/sos/ElectionsVoter/results2004.aspx?Section=142

Our Independent candidate without endorsement or support from the national or state Democratic Party was able to do better or hold her own with Democratic endorsed candidates in all the other Districts that lost to Republican incumbents. Not only that but she managed to earn those 100,617 votes spending less money than the Democratic party machine endorsed candidates $25,966 to her opponents $1,751,075. However being able to outspend her by over a million bought him an extra 86,000 votes at 186,534 to win the election.

The point of this long-winded exercise is that if she can do it Hackett can do it. Do it better and smarter because young Iraq Veteran Jon Soltz hit that nail on the head in my opening quote above, "Hackett brought credibility on the No. 1 issue facing the nation -- the war in Iraq," The Democratic Party loses credibility on that issue because Hackett is no longer running, and because they had a hand in his decision."

Were Hackett to be drafted to run or decide to run as an Independent, Conservative Ohio Democrats would be in a most vulnerable position. Not only that but the Republicans will not be able to exploit this very real vulnerability of the Democratic Party.

Republicans contended the Democrats hurt themselves.

"The Democrat party bosses dumped a candidate with mainstream vote-getting potential for one of their most liberal members," said Dan Ronayne, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "In doing so, the Democrats have settled on a candidate who is fundamentally out of touch with the mainstream values of Ohioans. Happy Valentine's Day, indeed."
Well I believe Sherrod Browns support for Veterans, Military Retirees, and our Troops needs to be what really matters. Not what party he belong to. If Brown has a record that shows that he really "Supports the Troops," with acts instead of words, slogans and bumper stickers and his Republican opponent Senator Mike DeWine does not. If that is ones definition of Liberal and out of touch with the mainstream values of Ohioans then Ohioans do not really "Support the Troops."

I intend showing that Mike DeWine does not Support Our Veterans, Military Families, Troops, and Military Retirees, and Sherrod Brown does. If an alternative is available I will research what they can do for US.

If Paul Hackett were to run as an Independent, he would then have my full support depending upon what his platform for Veterans, Military Families, and our troops would be. He also has to take a stand on Iraq that calls for a withdrawal based on the “logistical realities” of moving over 150,000 troops safely without creating a bloody route that insurgents would take advantage of to kill more troops that are American.

I believe the democrats LOST creditability all across the board, not just on the number 1, 2, or 3 issues. To force someone off the ballot -AND- then calling their financial supporters to stop supporting them is outrageous, undemocratic, and just plain sleazy. It's a third party for me!

No Brother Spike, I have to respectfully disagree with you. Now is the time that Veterans have to figure out how to use the Write In Candidate choice on each states ballot, find a candidate that is worth a salt and DRAFT that candiadate to be OUR Representative if he/she wants to be or not. http://www.sos.state.oh.us/sos/publicAffairs/candReqGuide.aspx?Section=1265 Here in Ohio a requirements for a Write In Candidate are: A person desiring to be a write-in candidate at a primary or general election must file with the appropriate election officials a “declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate.” Only write-in candidates who have filed valid declarations of intent will have votes counted in the primary or general election. (R.C. 3513.041) Qualifications Generally: A write-in candidate must meet all of the eligibility requirements of the office sought. (See “Qualifications” under the specific office.) Filing Deadlines: Primary election: By 4 p.m. on March 13, 2006 (50th day before the primary election). General election: By 4 p.m. on September 18, 2006 (50th day before the general election). Filing Fee: Same as any other candidate for the office sought. (See “Filing Fees” under the specific office.) Petition Form Numbers: #13: All offices except federal office and governor and lieutenant governor. #13B: Joint candidates for governor and lieutenant governor. #13C: U.S. Congress (House and Senate). Filed With: Any office to be voted on statewide: Secretary of State’s Elections Division- Columbus. All other offices: Appropriate county board of elections. (See “Filed With” under the specific office.) Signature Requirements: None (No petition. At least here in Ohio a write in Candidate could given the ideal circumstances be a Dark Horse candidate. However, depending on office running for one is given 50 days to get name recognition without in most cases being allowed on most debates or candidate forums. This also requires an extensive dedicated following within let's say a Congressional District if running for Congress. It is not beyong the impossible for an Independent or third party candidate to be a spoiler for both parties by changing their mind and doing a write in or some other Veteran doing so with substantial backing from swing voters pissed at both parties and fed up with the Iraq War. However, those are only single issues. Question is are they important enough to overcome the wedge issues thrown at you. Advantage a Write In candidate has at 50 days out. The opposition has little time to gather and throw mud at you.

Mr. Hanafin, Now is the time to insist that all ballots include a line that reads: D. None of the above meet my personal requirement for honesty and morality.
