What would Thomas Paine think of spying on Americans?
Posted By Harvey Kaye at 1:06 PM

Fellow Citizens,

I keep thinking of what Thomas Paine would do in response to revelations that the Bush Administration once again has authorized itself to disregard the U.S. Constitution. And I recall how, when issuing his revolutionary call for independence and the making of a democratic republic, Paine pre-empted those who would have proposed the creation of a monarchy in America by declaring:

"But where says some is the King of America? I'll tell you Friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the Royal Brute of Britain. Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solemnly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be brought forth placed on the divine law, the word of God; let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America THE LAW IS KING. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be King; and there ought to be no other. But lest any ill use should afterwards arise, let the crown at the conclusion of the ceremony be demolished, and scattered among the people whose right it is".

Wise words - that our CIC scoffs at. So far, everything that king george II has done concerning our military has played right into the hands of our enemies. Unless we get some dem majorities in office, and that includes the office of the president, we will continue to be scorned by the rest of the world, and we will certainly have an Islamic Theocracy in Iraq - working in league with the other America-hating Islamic theocracies of the world - and they are growing, thanks in large part to the actions of george bush II. Thomas Paine's words are so, so important. I only hope that America wakes up before it is too late, and we find ourselves on an isolated island - with our former allies and friends having nothing to do with our arrogant ways.

Thank you for your message, Mr. Kaye, and thank you for your excellent book, Thomas Paine and the Promise of America. Your book shows how Paine expressed the true spirit of freedom and liberty that this great country was founded upon and how that spirit has continued to live through others since. Veterans for Common Sense is such a place where that spirit resides today. As Americans, freedom and liberty are in our DNA but require an informed and active citizenry to keep alive. Paine's own words of yesteryear could be describing our leadership today: "Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions." (from Common Sense) As Mr. Paine also stated, "We have it in our power to begin the world over again." May we all do our part!

briefly. we sit on the edge of the abyss. it matters little what tom paine, mahatma genadi, tolstoy, whitman, or, even, for that matter what anyone thinks. the genie is out of the bottle and silliness is being "used" to somehow have him return to the mystic. amerika, 1947, made a pack with amalek. amalek has come home to roost. it is simple. hannah ahrendt opened our eyes to the banality of evil. it is here and nothing can help us, now. again, the jews will suffer the wrath of the pogrom and all will stand idly. it is the lure of easy money and oil is easy money. so, tom paine, good night.
