More on the car bombing and what may be a deadly screwup for U.S. troops
Posted By Charles Sheehan-Miles at 3:41 PM

A couple of news outlets are now reporting some disturbing news.  Witnesses apparently say that when the troops arrived, they called out on a loudspeaker to clear the area, because there was a report of a bomb.

After that, some of the soldiers gave candy to some children, attracting a crowd to one of the humvees.  Then a car burst out of an alley and detonated.

It very much raises the question -- why were they handing out candy to kids when they hadn't secured the area even to the extent of looking down alleyways?  At a minimum, some new procedures need to be in place to prevent children from being exposed to this level of danger -- particularly since this isn't the first time.  Last September, 35 children were killed in a similar incident.

Sure, mistakes happen. The point is, we learn from them. The military has a pretty effective process of conducting after-action reviews, learning from them, and implementing what they learn. What I hope we'll see is that this incident leads to changed tactical SOPs such that children are less likely to be caught in the crossfire.

It's amazing how closely this war resembles the Vietnam war. I recall a similar incident where motor shells were dropped into a school yard killing dozens of Vietnamese children. The Viet Cong were enitially blames; however after further investigation it was evident that the VC had nothing to do with it. The reason was a very sinister one

not sure what but something really stinks with this story. a similar incident happened last september? was there a big buzz about it in the news like this recent tragedy, because i don't remember hearing anything about that. and your question seriously deserves an answer.

I suspect the answer lies in training and mission handling. They went out there, and some dumb private (I can say that, because I was once a dumb private) handed out the candy without thinking about the context of the mission they were on.

In short, my guess from the stories at this point was that it was a stupid mistake.

That said, Army training and doctine is designed to prevent stupid mistakes that get people killed. Hopefully they'll learn from this tragedy.
