+Recommend this blog Two recent articles illustrate how the recent “tamping-down” of violence in Iraq, while costly in every aspect imaginable, has been a real security "bargain": “We were basically hiring terrorists”, Anna Badkhen, Salon.com, 6 August 2008. The U.S. signed up legions of sketchy Iraqi fighters to help stop sectarian violence. Now, most may lose their security jobs -- but remain armed and angry. "When the SOIs stood up, we were basically hiring terrorists," said Lt. Justin Chabalko, using the military acronym for the Sons of Iraq. Chabalko's 2-4 Infantry Battalion of the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division frequently patrols the Dora Market. Did Britain make Mehdi Army pact?, Crispin Thorold, BBC News, 5 August 2008. The British in Basra made a secret pact with the Mehdi Army which kept the military out of March's Iraqi-led offensive against the Shia militia for a week, according to the Times newspaper. The BBC's Crispin Thorold, in Baghdad, assesses whether such an "accommodation" could have been possible. "The command has to maintain morale. It can't be seen to do a deal with people who have killed soldier's mates. That would make the government as popular as a bag of puke," said the [British military intelligence] source. All this shifting of battle-lines and moral give & take puts me in mind of the following quote from an old-school novelist who seems to have been maybe only twenty-odd years off-base in many his dystopian predictions (which were conceived, it’s worth noting, during his days as a WWII government propagandist): The war, therefore, if we judge it by the standards of previous wars, is merely an imposture. It is like the battles between certain ruminant animals whose horns are set at such an angle that they are incapable of hurting one another. But though it is unreal it is not meaningless. It eats up the surplus of consumable goods, and it helps to preserve the special mental atmosphere that a hierarchical society needs. –George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-four Read more | 0 comments
