Contact your representatives on Darfur
1103 recommendation(s).
+Recommend this blog Genocide in SudanOnly a few weeks after the world looked back to the Rwandan genocide, in which hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed, the nations of the world are looking on similar events occurring in Darfur, Sudan, where little action is being taken. An excellent New York Times report today illustrates the scale of the problem (see http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/NewsArticle.cfm?ID="2261)." According to a recent Congressional Research Service report, 300,000 civilians may die by the end of the year if dramatic action is not taken. Yesterday the African Union agreed to increase their peacekeeping force to over 3,000 soldiers. Veterans for Common Sense believes that American foreign policy should be in line with our values. Please contact your Congressional representatives and urge them to support the African Union mission with airlift capacity, logistical support, and cash. Iraqi Insurgency Bigger, Better Funded than thought previously
1102 recommendation(s).
+Recommend this blog The New York Times reported this morning that a new picture of the insurgency is arising, indicating that it is both bigger and better funded than original estimates. Of course, the troops already know that, because they are dealing with the consequences on the ground. Increasing numbers of attacks, all across the country, are threatening the elections and making a mockery of "liberating" Iraq. We've talked here before about the very real need to stabilize Iraq. Though VCS had grave questions about going to war in Iraq, believing it was both unnecessary and dangerous, the bottom line is that now that we've toppled the government and created chaos in that country, we have a responsibility to the Iraqi people to bring some kind of stability. And that means, one way or another, dealing with the insurgency. The delimma, of course, is how. We can sit here, thousands of miles away, and talk policy and what should be done, but its the troops on the ground who have to deal with the reality. And the Iraqi civilians. If you take a scan through the various Iraqi weblogs we're starting to collect here, you'll find that there are very real mixed opinions there as well. I want to close on one final note. One of the Iraq War vets bloggers we've been watching, Boots on the Ground, just got notice that he is being "stop-lossed" and sent back to Iraq for another tour. Take a moment to drop by his blog and wish him the best. Like thousands of other American troops, he's going to be back in the thick of it soon. Let's pray for a safe return for all of the folks who are over there dealing with the reality of this war.
