How the Pentagon Failed U.S. Troops
Paul Rieckhoff and Dafna Hochman Common Dreams August 31, 2004
Operation Truth raises some very good arguments in the article below. Lieutenant Paul Rieckhoff recently returned from Iraq, where he led a platoon in the 3rd Infantry Division for 10 months. He is founder and executive director of Operation Truth, an advocacy and educational organization created to support American troops in Iraq. Dafna Hochman, a doctoral student in political science at Columbia University, was a foreign policy and defense adviser in the U.S. Senate.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Swift Boat Smears
Peter Hart Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting August 31, 2004
Veterans for Common Sense agrees with FAIR: "A group of Vietnam veterans called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth have managed to dominate campaign coverage recently with a series of inaccurate and unfounded allegations about John Kerry's Vietnam War service. But instead of debunking the group's TV ads and numerous media appearances, the press corps has devoted hours of broadcast time and considerable print attention to the group's message." The press has a moral obligation to inform viewers when snake oil is being sold or when someone claims the earth is flat.

Iraq War Veteran Runs for Open House Seat in Virginia
Michael D. Shear and Chris L. Jenkins Washington Post August 31, 2004
David B. Ashe, an Iraq war veteran, is currently unopposed for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Virginia's 2nd District, including Virginia Beach, parts of Norfolk and Hampton and Virginia's Eastern Shore, the site of the world's largest Navy base. This unusual development arose when the incumbent was forced to resign his House seat by the Republican Party after being revealed as homosexual. This makes veteran-rich Virginia a serious battleground state in 2004.

Is Bush a "Phony Veteran"?
Veteran and Legionnaire BuzzFlash August 30, 2004
The following article raises a question about President George Bush's veteran status not previously mentioned by the national press. While most of the press focuses on Senator John Kerry's combat decorations or Bush's missing year from the Texas National Guard, the article below asks, "Is Bush a veteran or not?" The article asserts that, "If Bush isn’t a veteran, this would be a bombshell of enormous proportions and raise questions about Bush’s credibility as Commander in Chief for America’s 25 million veterans."

A Shameful Lie
Memphis Flyer Editorial Board Memphis Flyer (Tennessee) August 30, 2004
More people should read newspapers such as the Memphis Flyer, and not watch FOX Newx. Here's what the people need to know, according to the editorial board of the Memphis Flyer: "Senator Kerry is the victim of a Big Lie campaign, nothing less, and, as [pilot Bob] Mintz said this week, the attacks against him are not only shameful in themselves but a reproach to every other veteran who performed similar service." The two articles from February 2004 recounting the claims by FeEx pilot Bob Mintz are reprinted below.

Death rocks counselors who work with soldiers returning from war
Shawne K. Wickham Union Leader (New Hampshire) August 29, 2004
The war in Iraq is taking a heavy toll on the mental health of our service members and on the counselors assisting them. Here's some good advice from the article below, "Listen, really listen. The job for the rest of us, VA Vet Center Team Leader Caryl Ahern said, 'is to welcome them home and to listen to them, to really listen to them, where they’re at right now, whether they need to talk or whether they need some space to try to make sense of their own experiences.' We owe them nothing less, the counselors say."

400,000 U.S. Citizens Denounce Iraq War During Huge Assembly in New York City
Sara Kugler and Christine Hauser New York Times and Washington Post August 29, 2004
United States Constitution, Amendment I (part of the Bill of Rights), "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Today, as many as 400,000 Americans assembled to express their opposition to the policies of the current administration, especially the Iraq War. Regardless of your point of view, the fact the people assembled and spoke out peacefully is highly commnedable and patriotic.

A Failure of Accountability
Washington Post Editorial Board Washington Post August 29, 2004
Here's the bottom line: If President George Bush ordered the review into the definition of torture, and if Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld approved the use of attack dogs as part of a plan to torture Iraqi civilians, then where is the accountability? Who conducts oversight? Who holds government officials responsible for their actions during a time of one-party government?

Israeli and Iranian Spies Linked to Bush Administration's Iraq War
Warren P. Strobel Knight Ridder Newspapers August 29, 2004
In what could emerge as an enormousscandal, recent press reports show that an Israeli Reserve Colonel, Larry Franklin, may have given secrets to the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC), who then gave the secrets to Israel. Other press reports indicate that convicted criminal Ahmed Chalabi, who is Iraqi and owns a resort home in Iran, stands accused of spying for Iran. Is it possible the Bush Administration was duped into war against Iraq by Israeli and Iranian spies?

The unseen cost of war: American minds

FBI and VA in Dispute Over Alleged Terror Threat
AP and VA August 27, 2004
Once again, a broad terror alert was issued by the FBI and DHS. However, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security statement conflicts with a Department of Veterans Affairs statement issued a few hours later. Sadly, one potential outcome of this questionable terror alert might be that a veteran won't get the medical care he needs because the veteran was unreasonably frightened by the repeated claims of impending terrorist attack made by the Bush Administration.

War exacts high personal toll as Marine suffers double loss
Hal Bernton Seattle Times August 26, 2004
The most difficult miles of Rosanna Powers' life are bringing her from Florida to the small Washington state farming community of Mansfield, Douglas County, for her brother's funeral tomorrow. Then she will fly back across the country to help bury her fiancé the next day.

New York City Tramples Bill of Rights to Protect Central Park Grass?
USA Today Editorial Board USA Today August 26, 2004
The Constitution clearly provides for the freedom of assembly. That's why most public buildings are located next to green open space -- so the people may express their concerns to the government. However, the government of the City of New York ignores and tramples upon the rights of all Americans when they twist "assembly" into protest or anarchy and then claim security is more important than freedom. Let's ask all the World War II veterans a simple question: during their quest for absolute and violent power, didn't the Nazis in Germany insist security was more important than freedom? The history of the human race shows freedom exchanged for security surely remains the fastest route to despotism.

Iraq War Lies May Lead to Impeachment of Prime Minister Blair
David Hencke Guardian Unlimited (United Kingdom) August 26, 2004
Twelve Members of Parliament, in a procedure not used in 156 years, are starting the impeachment process to remove Prime Minister Tony Blair from his leadership role in the British government. Blair may be officially be accused of "high crimes and misdemeanours" for staging a pre-emptive war against Iraq based on lies. The result of the alleged crime is the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and more than 1,000 U.S. and U.K. service members.
