Bush's Quagmire in Iraq Uses Almost all of Army's Combat Soldiers
Associated Press Newsday (New York) April 29, 2004
Fact: Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 or the war on terror. Fact: Most of our military is stuck in the quagmire of Iraq, fighting a war of occupation against a population in revolt. By letting Afghanistan tumble into anarchy with only a few thousand U.S. troops on the ground, has Bush left our Nation vulnerable by placing nearly all of our available forces in Iraq?

A City That Lives for Revenge
SANDRA MACKEY New York Times April 29, 2004
Like so much else that was ignored by the civilian war planners, the challenge of governing the tribes seems to have been considered a minor detail in their plan to remake Iraq and the Middle East. Now it is left to the uniformed military commanders to protect their troops. Yet in the end, such protection ultimately depends on civilian policymakers who make the decisions on when and how to deploy the troops those commanders are committed to keeping safe. In Falluja, the policymakers failed before the war began. Those in the field, along with the occupation itself, will pay the price.

Mission Statement for the Conference Sponsored by the NGWRC: To bring together the scientist and the soldier, the advocate and the government, the end user and the administrator so that dialogue can be established and together we can work toward solving the problems we all face in understanding this issue.

The Reality of 18,000 Wounded in Iraq War on Front Page of Washington Post
Karl Vick Washington Post April 27, 2004
Veterans everywhere want to know why the current administration has refused to provide additional funding for veterans' healthcare. What's worse is that, according to the Disabled American Veterans, the Bush Administration proposed cutting hundreds of jobs at VA. Where is the outrage?

Iraq: The Moon is Down, Again!
William Marina Independent Institute April 27, 2004
In this interesting essay, the U.S. occupation of Iraq is compared with the Nazi occupation of Norway during World War II. This is true because the invasion and occupation have lost all legitimacy -- except for the oil companies and fundamentalists strongly supporting President Bush's policy of pre-emptive unilateral war.

Guernica in Iraq: Will Bush Attack Iraqi Civilians, Even After UN Warning?
Three Articles April 25, 2004
In March 2003, when U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell lied to the United Nations and the world that Iraq was a threat in order to justify the U.S. pre-emptive invasion and occupation, the U.N. covered the mural of Guernica, a tremendously moving painting by Pablo Picasso about the slaughter of helpless civilians in Spain by the Fascists and Nazis. Today, U.S. President Bush prepares for a large military attack upon civilians in Najaf and Fallujah in Iraq so Bush may complete his conquest of Iraq's oil and continue his self-proclaimed "crusade." In response, the U.N. warned Bush to "tread carefully" as civilian casualties in Iraq soar into the thousands. Will there be a repeat of Guernica?

Think of Those the U.S. Has Detained
Aaron Glantz Inter Press Service News Agency April 21, 2004
If major combat is over, as the current administration claimed nearly one year ago, then why is the U.S. holding more than 20,000 Iraqis in prisoner of war camps? This count is in addition to the hundreds of people held in the prisoner of war camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Kerry's Military Records Show a Highly Praised Officer
Associated Press New York Times April 21, 2004
This site repeatedly posts news articles about how President George W. Bush can't account for nearly one year while in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. Now this site will CS post a news article describing Senator John Kerry's Vietnam War service. Compare their military records. Kerry, who is a veteran, earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Heart medals during combat. Bush, who isn't a veteran, failed to attend weekend drill while in the National Guard.

The somber task of honoring the fallen
Hal Bernton Seattle Times April 21, 2004
Quote: "For U.S. troops, April has been the worst month of this war, with at least 94 service members killed by hostile fire. 'So far this month, almost every night we send them home,' Tami Silicio said. '... It's tough. Very tough.'" And remember, no high-ranking official from the current administration has ever attended the funeral of any of our Nation's fallen soldiers.

US Christian fundamentalists are driving Bush's Middle East policy
George Monbiot Guardian (United Kingdom) April 20, 2004
Distribute this article widely. This essay argues convincingly how a small group of religious extremists has hijacked U.S. foreign policy. This group of zealots are fomenting religious war in the Middle East. This article should prompt Americans with common sense to revisit the very serious issue of why our Nation's founders insisted that the merger of church and government be prevented. The issue of separation of church and state was so important that it was included in our Constitution.

The Threat Within America: Acts by Right-Wing Extremists "Remain at a Very High Level"
Howard Witt Chicago Tribune April 20, 2004
President George Bush has made three major mistakes regarding the security of our Nation while in the White House. First, he went on vacation in August 1991 after he was warned about impending terrorist attacks against New York and Washington using hijacked planes. Second, he invaded Iraq based on lies and using money Congress intended for fighting the terrorists. And, third, he fails to take action against the growing threat of extreme right-wing violence in the U.S.

Spain, Poland, Honduras, and Nicaragua Retreat from Iraq
Derek Scally Irish Times April 20, 2004
The escalating battles within Iraq have turned the occupation into all-out warfare for the hearts, minds, and resources of Iraq. As a result, more nations are removing their troops. This further narrows the focus of the war as a fight between the U.S., the U.K., mercenaries, and missionaries on one side, and several factions of Iraqis on the other side.

U.S. Corporate Mercenaries Call the Shots in Iraq
Barry Lando TomPaine.com April 18, 2004
Some news reports place the number of mercenaries in Iraq as high as 18,000. They are guarding oil fields and pipelines, ammunition depots, and religious missionaries. They work with near complete immunity from the law and little control by U.S. military occupation forces. From the view of some Iraqis, these hired guns are part of the occupation army, as they guard the foreign corporations looting their economy and missionaries offering food, water, shelter, clothing, and safety to Muslims who convert to Christianity.

Who Will Provide Security in Iraq? New Iraqi Army Refuses to Fight Fellow Iraqis
Reuters Sydney Morning Herald April 18, 2004
President George Bush insists he will hand over sovereignty to Iraq on June 30. However, if Iraq is ruled by an illegitimate U.S.-picked dictatorship, and if the Iraqi army and police to remain under full U.S. control, then the U.S. still runs Iraq. In a recent development, the U.S. military is arresting Iraqi soldiers who refuse to attack Iraqi civilians revolting against the U.S. occupation. Therefore, the concept of "turning over" Iraq to Iraqis is a false argument. Bush's recent change in policy to allow the U.N. into Iraq may be a good development for Iraqis. However, many see Bush as using the U.N. for political cover as the civilian and military casuatlies continue escalating.
