Editorial: Senator Craig Should 'Step Down'
THE SAD CASE OF SEN. LARRY CRAIG'S BATHROOM BUST --
Craig's poor judgment tells us it's time for him to step down.
In the last couple of days, the bathroom bust of Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) has become the stuff of legend.
Craig is the Ranking Minority Member on the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs. Craig was the Chairman of the Committee but lost that role with the power shift in the 110th Congress.
Now, Craig is just a laughing stock.
Trolling for sex in a bathroom in an airport? A U.S. Senator?
Yesterday at a news conference, Craig angrily said he is not gay. I believe him. I think he is just a twisted person who gets his kicks from high-risk, "forbidden sex" in public bathrooms.
Yet, Craig would have us believe this is not the case. Craig wants us to believe he accidentally pled guilty to something he didn't do. That doesn't work.
And, Craig lied. Because if he didn't commit the crime to which he pled guilty, then he lied to the Court. If he did commit the crime, then he lied to us at the press conference when he said he didn't do anything wrong. He can't have it both ways.
Also, Craig can't continue to blame the media, in this case an Idaho newspaper, for his problems. I doubt a reporter put a gun to his head and forced him into the airport bathroom.
Larry Craig is guilty...guilty of the worst case of bad judgment I have seen. Let me list them for you...
1. Getting busted for lewd behavior in a public place.
2. Keeping it from his family.
3. Not reporting the arrest to the Senate.
4. Not seeking legal counsel.
5. Blaming the media for his actions.
6. Many others, I'm sure.
Those five-plus reasons are enough for Craig to resign from the Senate.
Craig has been no friend of veterans. He has consistently opposed mandatory funding for VA healthcare. He has thrown tantrums on the Senate floor, bashing the veterans' service organizations for doing their job, asking more for veterans.
If (hopefully, when) Craig steps down, it will be no loss to the veterans of this country.
The next time Craig appears on TV, I don't want to hear any whining or any lies or any shifting of blame. Here's all I want to hear from U.S. Senator Larry Craig:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I hereby resign my seat in the United States Senate, effective immediately. Thank you. I will not take questions."
