Aug 25, VCS Weekly Update: Promoting Veterans Issues, From Sea to Shining Sea
|
|
This week's update examines the critical role our veterans are playing in this year's important Presidential election. From legislation introduced on Capitol Hill to the Presidential candidates' presentations before veterans, our issues continue holding the national spotlight.
First, VCS wants you to have unfiltered information. Please read the full text of Senator John McCain's speech to VFW from earlier this week. You can also read Senator Barack Obama's full comments to the VFW.
Second, we understand that many contributions that would have gone to VCS are now going to the Presidential campaigns. VCS will continue fighting for veterans long after the campaign is over. If you want veteran issues highlighted in the campaign now, then please make a tax-deductible donation to Veterans for Common Sense.
Third, some good news...Representative John Hall's legislation that would expedite disability claims for veterans passed the House 429 to zero. VCS testified numerous times advocating for positive changes for veterans. Chairman Hall called this legislation ". . . a composite of a year's worth of hearings and common sense suggestions."
Fourth, Senator Daniel Akaka works to increase veteran voter registration. Veterans for Common Sense keeps working to publicize the lack of resources available to our bedridden, wounded, and homeless veterans.
VCS urges our members to take action on this vital issue now. If Congress doesn't pass these bills in early September, then we're going to have to wait until January of 2009 and start all over again.
How much is it worth to you for VCS to expand our advocacy to help our hospitalized and homeless veterans vote? We are reaching out to reporters, other veteran groups, and Congress on this important issue. Even a small, recurring contribution will make a difference! VCS challenges all of our members to give $10 today to publicize our issues.
Thank you for your support of veterans!
