On February 2, 2005, the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review (GIELR) will host a full-day symposium on International Responses to the Environmental Consequences of War. This event is designed to address new developments in responding to environmental impacts caused by conflict-related activities, particularly with respect to recent activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The symposium aims to address cross-cutting themes, including the following topics:

  • Institutional mechanisms to pursue environmental damage claims
  • Assessing previous efforts to resolve environmental claims, such as the UN Compensation Commission proceedings for the first Gulf War
  • The problem of holding mercenaries accountable for international environmental damages
  • A practical assessment of liability issues created by recent conflicts.

The proceedings and additional articles will be published in the Spring 2005 focus issue of GIELR.

Confirmed participants include keynote speaker Pekka Haavisto, Chairman of the U.N. Environment Programme's Post-Conflict Assessment Unit; Julia Klee, Chief, Environmental Claims, U.N. Compensation Commission; Jay Austin, co-editor of the seminal anthology The Environmental Consequences of War; Charles Sheehan-Miles, executive director of Veterans for Common Sense; Dan Magraw, President, Center for International Environmental Law; Mark Drumbl, Professor, Washington & Lee Law School; and William Bradford of the University of Indiana Law School.
