VA Releases May 2007 Gulf War Veteran Healthcare and Disability Report
The Department of Veterans Affairs released their quarterly Gulf War Veterans Information System report for May 2005. Out of approximately 697,000 Gulf War veterans deployed to the war zone in 1990 - 1991, more than 280,000, or more than 40 percent, filed a disability claim against VA.
If Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans file claims at the same rate, then VA could reasonably expect more than 640,000 disablity claims from the two current wars. The rates for the new wars will be higher due to repeated deployments and active participation in 24/7 combat for one year or more.
Veterans for Common Sense obtained the Gulf War report using the Freedom of Information Act. VCS provides the report to our members, veterans, the public, reporters, and Congress for free because this factual information is of high public interest.
